Weekend find: NES top loader

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Brag time. I scored a working (once I added a power supply) NES top-loader this weekend, with 4 games. A$5. That's roughly US$2.20.

Not only is it smaller, thus easier to find a home for when I want to hook it up, but it happily plays the 30-odd "Asian Version" carts I bought a while back that my standard NES wasn't interested in.

Of particular note amongst the poorly labelled old carts was a copy of "Dragon Spirit" -- a very nice shoot-em-up that I enjoyed a few rounds of over the weekend. Also in my previously unplayble collection was a nice legit version of Metroid which I had never played on real hardware before.

Sounds awesome.

Top loaders go for $$$ on EBay. You're lucky to find one that was in the wild and not too pricy either. I have never seen a toploader in my area of the States.

I've just recently seen my first top loaders in my area. My local GameSwap has 2 of them complete w/o boxes for 89.99 each. Tempting but not quite tempting enough.

What is the average price range for a top loader? I know they are in great demand but was just wondering how much demand.

Well, call my buy US$2 and the two glitch mentioned US$90 and the average price is US$60.67 :D

Seriously though, checking completed eBay auctions, the average is about US$90 for a loose one. A few dip below that and many others are bundled with at least a few games, so it's hard to be exact.

Mine came with no power supply, no RF adapter/cable thing, only one controller and four very common games. It would have probably got only about US$70 on eBay. Mind you, that's 35x what I paid for it...

Would you believe I actually had one in 1993 and returned it because the graphics looked inferior to the original NES?

I bought that thing new for only $45 at Sears and I RETURNED it!
