Game console you wanted but never got originally?

Recommended Posts

The Atari 800 computer. My parents bought me an Atari 400, but it had a crappy keyboard and it was hard to program stuff. So I just played games on it. One of my fiends would come over to my house when I was'nt there and my mom would let him program on it. We used to let him work for an hour or two then come in and "mistakenly" shut it off and he would lose his work. After the 2nd time( shutting off the power) he convinced his mom to get him an Atari 800 and we did not see him again for a couple of years. I may have gotten into computers earlier if that 400 had'nt been such a pain in the ass to type on. Missle Command rocked on it though!

I always wanted a 2600 and a master system, and until late last year I never had one. I picked up a mastersystem and a bunch of games for Chrismas last year and have no regrets - I can't believe I missed out on those awesome graphics at the time, it would've blown my mind. The 2600 I wanted for the joysticks, but after getting it this last february I have become very familiar with a ton of great 2600 titles like River Raid and Circus Atari. So much fun to be had in short bursts with that system.

I've wanted a Turbo Duo (or variant there of that will let me play japanese hue cards and the region free CD's), and a neo geo CD since they were in their prime. Could never afford either, and I feel like that might someday soon be a possibility!

Atari Jaguar, actually. Hey, I grew up playing Atari, and still played one once the nintendo's and sega's took over. It was years after getting an SNES, then an NES befor I actually started playing those more than atari's, but back in the early 90's I think 93, I heard of the Jaguar, and was like "Holy Sch!t, I gotta have one of those."

I finally got on, about 98 I believe, when they were being blown out, for $50 + 10 games by various early online sites. (got mine from www.c-west.com/atari which changed to another site and then I believe they wentdefunct) and holy shit, I was blown away, and remember, I had a N64, PSOne, and saturn at the time. (well, still do, but...) Of course, unlike a lot of people I was really comparing it to the SNES/Genesis, which is what I knew it was intended to compete with. Of course, I guess it could have been competing with 3DO and CDI, which looked awesome in displays, but I never got one (always wanted Gex though, loved sidescrolling platformers)

Thing is, for whatever reason, the Atari never made it "here" Maybe big places like Dallas or OK City got it, but small shithole towns, at least with their necks in my woods never got them. It only really became possible to aquire one once the internet started growing good (or order from a catalog)

Anyhow, lots of my friends made fun of me for wanting an "Atari, that crusty old piece of shit" and pretty much all of them would shut their face when they got to compare games like Fantasy Pinball, Flashback, and Doom to their versions on the SNES and Genesis.

I still lust over the Jag-CD, mostly I'd love to get a lot of those homebrews, but only get to get them when they get ported to cart, if ever (or even official games, I LOVE Iron soldier 2, kind of hope someone takes a crack at an IS3 conversion)

Anyhow, yeah, Jaguar for me. I do want a 3DO and CDI, but have never seen one in the wild, but I didn't ever really crave one like the jag, just love atari and always wanted to support US, even though they are probably made in mylasia or whate3ver LOL :P

^^ While we are on the topic of 3DO and CDi, were there any genuinely good games released on them? Mostly I have heard many of the games were stuffed full of fmv (full motion video) sequences but were otherwise shallower than the most basic of text adventures.

A Toy Works (I think Kay Bee related) sold off their crazy large old stocks of Virtual Boys, Jaguars and Genesis IIIs around the same time before shuttering. I bought a III, my buddy bought a VB (I now have it and still play Mario Tennis sometimes.) but I never did buy the Jaguar. I can still remember the massive piles of them all. Just looking at us.

Actaully all of them. But seriously super Nintendo. Never had it back then. Got 2 now. But back then never did. Wasted all my money on the original Nintendo NES.

Colecovision. I had Intellivision. Loved it. Was lucky to get it. Neighbor got Colecovision which came with the most amazing Donkey Kong I've ever seen. Then DK Jr. Then Galaga. The Mr. Do. Then Mr. Do's Castle. Then Zaxxon. Then Tapper. Gotta say though that when you look at Colecovision today, each game looks kinda grey (the color palette is muted) no matter what game. Intellivision just seems fresher. And now I can really appreciate the originality that went into Intellivision games. Microsurgeon?
