Godzilla

so whatch y'all think o the first homebrew console package?

Recommended Posts

If they can get the price a bit lower than $200, I'm definately in. But I'm not paying PS2/Xbox prices for a refurbished 7800. But, you're right, I'm damn interested - for the right price. ;)

The price is for spit and polish from a shoe shine boy. I have two 7800 units (one boxed) that I purchased at a thrift store for less than $4 each .. and they work just as well as these refurbished ones ..

$200 is a high price for a lot of hype. Funny they are not offering a *refurbished* 2600. 2600s are too plentiful in the wild and on ebay so they could not command that kinda cash.

whats wrong with a little (x)(h)ype for our ol dead systems? Id love to see our classic systems recieve even a modicrum of a wink like the modern systems do. maybe make people realize that isnt all just graphics and sound, and that good pure fast gameplay MIGHT just be worth something?

I thought it looked nice until I saw the price...

No way I would pay THAT much for a 7800..it's much like you would expect to pay for a new one in 1984!

Agreed. For a little searching before and a little elbow grease afterward, you could save yourself 3/4 of that amount. It's not like they are actually replacing any electronic components or anything

I'm thinking that the same person/people who outbid me on EBay for not one, but TWO 7800s, could possibly be the same people refurbishing them and selling them for $200 or more. It's not fair to collectors who only want to use EBay to further their collection..not turn around and sell something for 2 times what they paid. I don't do this and I'm not putting up over $60 for a 7800 on EBay.

I dunno  Just my 2 cents.

If the price goes down about $150, it would be worth it. Otherwise, I'll stick to the $10 special I got with the scratch on the top ;)

I don't see anything wrong with charging that for a warranty and a system. Seriously, we are all "in the know". We all know its worth less. Thats probably not one we would buy. If you have a buddy at work though, that wants one; and you don't feel like fixing every little problem he ever has with it, send him onto the website. If you are just an enthusiast (also read, dont know what you are doing, and just want it to "work"), this is the way to go.

I have bought and sold arcade machines for years now, and you have to cover yourself. If you sell one for 100 bucks, and it breaks, you lose money. If you sell it for 500, and give a 1 year warranty, they know you will stand behind it, and you won't lose your rear if it goes down.

I'm not arguing they should all be this way, but for a certain part of the market, the "turn key" systems are a necessary ( and profitable) endeavor.

Just my .25 cents

Cassidy

Now I know who keeps on buying all the cheap 7800's on eBay.

I have a suspicion that you'll see them on evilbay again.

I really hope they have a nice box for the system. And really, for $200-$250, they should have a/v+svid like any modern console :-) maybe get e.b. to carry em :-) :-)

I really hope that whoever is doing this stops for the sake of collectors everywhere. They're making it impossible for people like me to get a 7800 to play. I will definitely stop using EBay if the bid on the 7800 that I want is surpassed by this person. I can always buy one through Collector's Cards and Games and I probably will if I get outbid. The only reason I bid was to see if I could get it cheaper than $45. That's not the case.

Nono...I wasn't making light of it. I was referring to what will happen when people aren't buying the "refurbished" ones. They'll probably give up and auction them off eventually (unless people actually fall for it).

Ohh ok.

I don't think it's worth paying for a refurbished 7800..at least one that sells for more than a PS2.

I believe in getting the best systems for the least amount of money possible.

I think the only way you can justify that price is if you are manufacturing them from all-new components. Then it might make sense because the new components would probably give the console a longer lifespan. All 7800s are over 12 years old, some nearing 20.

If they could add any new hardware to the console, like built-in POKEY chip or high-score cart ability, A/V outs (a must), that would also help make it more worthwhile.

True...but all they are doing is the painstaking process of tracking them down and cleaning them up with a can of WD40

What's the average lifespan of internal components, anyway?

The link is not working on their site, maybe they are rethinking it. Picked up my 7800 on Ebay for $32 plus actual shipping. It is in excellent condition and works great. It included six 7800 games (one was boxed), 0ne joystick and the power adapter. It did not include the RF switchbox, but I picked up a new one for $7 at RS.

The site says they're working on modded ones, and if I could get a 7800 with all the right mods done (ie high score, current AV outs, maybe a modern look) I would consider paying about 100-150

Maybe they should consider making controllers and/or attractive game storage racks.... market matching ones of those with a custom 7800 shell on the system and they'd have a winner... at least imho

If they really wanted my $$, they'd have to do the following:

-A/V or other video inputs(Component, Composite, S-Video, whatever)

-Ability to save high score(high score cart)

-New components (not just sprucing up the thing with WD-40 as Nukey mentioned)

-Controllers that won't break really fast

-Newer homebrewed games(I know nothing of 7800 homebrews so I can't say more regarding this)

Granted, if they did all this and drove the price down a bit, I would consider buying from them. Otherwise, no way!
