Has anyone ever used a battlestation II with the Colecovision?

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a battlestation II and I am loving it. One problem though, I can't get it to work with the colecovision. I tried plugging it into a champ and tried plugging it in directly all with no real results. Any help is appreciated.

I never have, but surely at least 1 fire button and the direction joystick would work the same as it does on the Atari 2600. As for pressing number buttons and the other fire buttons, I think you'd have to make a custom adaptor of some sort.

As HardHat said, if it works on an Atari 2600 with, of course, one firebutton functioning... then it should work on the ColecoVision with at least one firebutton functioning. As for as the Champ Keypad Adapter CA-340, there are two version s of this keypad adapter that are floating around out there. The first will only allow for one firebutton to be functional, even if you plug in an official ColecoVision Hand Controller. The second version is completely compatible as both firebuttons will function. I doubt this is your problem, but just thought I'd bring that to light.

BTW, just plug in the BattleStation in Port #1 and your Coleco made Hand Controller in Port #2. You can make all keypad entries via the Port #2 controller.

When I plugged it in nothing was functional. I had to unplug it then plug it back in once the game started and then I only had about two seconds till the game paused.

Do you know how to tell the difference between the two Champ adapters?

Do you know how to tell the difference between the two Champ adapters?

There is no outward physical difference as far as I recall and seeing that I sold the one-firebutton compatible version (with full disclosure :D ) that I had, I can't double check and compare side by side. The only way to know for sure is to plug the Champ Keypad in with a controller that has two known working firebuttons (the Coleco Hand Controller will do the job) and test it out. If only one of the firebuttons responds, then you have the original Champ Keypad that supports only one firebutton. If both firebuttons work (test with a game like Cosmic Avenger where the two firebuttons perform different functions... shot missiles and drop bombs), then you have the later version of the Champ Keypad... the one that you want.

My Battlestation II also doesn't work properly with ColecoVision. The joystick works, but the fire button doesn't. I tried it on the SMS, Genesis, Commodore/Amiga settings. Strange, since you would expect it to work just like any other SMS or Genesis controller with one-button functionality. Still an awesome controller.

Problem solved (I think). Pin 5 must still be connected even when the Commodore/Amiga switch is activated. Pin 5 can send power back to the console, and this causes all kinds of weirdness in the CV. I used a Champ adapter and disconnected the connector to Pin 5 from the Champ's PCB. Then, I used the Genesis port on the BS2 (the SMS port won't work correctly for some reason). Everything works as it should now, except, of course, you get only one-button functionality.

You don't need a Champ adapter to do this. Just get an extension cable and cut the wire leading to Pin 5. On my Champ it is the yellow wire, but I'm sure it can vary across manufacturers.
