flammingcowz #1 Posted May 19, 2012 I tried to play it on the Activision Anthology for PS2, but the paddle emulation is horrible. Then I tried to play it in Stella, but the arrow keys don't do it properly, and the mouse has a lag to it. Anyone on here have experience doing this? LidLikesIntellivision #2 Posted May 19, 2012 (edited) Do you know the stelladaptor? I bought it recently and works fine with Stella as the name suggests I just tested the paddles but it seems, didn't play much, but it seems too good. Keatah #3 Posted May 21, 2012 (edited) True Kaboom is unplayable in the higher levels. Did (does) the stelladapter make a difference? Does it eliminate the mouse skipping and lag? I know there are programs that can change the mouse refresh rate (at the driver level in windows). So I don't know if that would make a difference or not. LidLikesIntellivision #4 Posted May 21, 2012 As soon as my harmony cart arrives, I'll play kaboom in the real Atari hardware (I haven't got kaboom cart). Then I'll test if it's the same as playing in the emulator. But I'm sure somebody else has compared the paddles with the real hardware and with stelladaptor... Anyway, I want to play kaboom and check what I can do with paddles using stelladaptor. After 1 week playing kaboom in the HSC using mouse, I reached 2,296. I'll post my score with paddles and stelladaptor. Good excuse to play Atari
Cynicaster #5 Posted May 21, 2012 I'm pretty sure Kaboom is one of those games that will never be right unless played with real hardware. Granted, I've never tried the Stelladaptor thingy, but the slightest lag/inaccuracy/variance in performance with respect to the real thing would render it useless. Slight inaccuracies can be brushed off when playing Ms. Pac-Man or Pitfall, but not Kaboom.

The Stelladaptor/2600-daptor should make playing quite a bit nicer, but I agree that Kaboom is very sensitive to real hardware. But IMHO, using the mouse for paddle emulation isn't very good anyway, and I'm not sure what can be done to improve it.
Deteacher #7 Posted May 21, 2012 Kaboom plays great on the Stella Emulator with paddles and the Stelladaptor. Just make sure you have a nice clean set of paddles to reduce/eliminate jitter.
flammingcowz #8 Posted May 22, 2012 I have a port on my computer that an atari controller fits into perfectly. I remember I used to buy computer joysticks that would plug in to the same port, and I could use them. Is there any way to get the computer to recognize it plugged in this way? I don't remember how I used to do it
maiki #9 Posted May 22, 2012 So should I read this as that there is no lag on real system?
+SpiceWare #10 Posted May 22, 2012 So should I read this as that there is no lag on real system? as long as it's plugged into a CRT display. If you plug it into a flat panel it has to do some processing to convert the analog signal to digital for display. That process can make it lag. The effect will be worse on some TVs than others. That's why games like Rock Band have a calibration feature.
CorTat-G #11 Posted May 22, 2012 I've tried the buttons and mouse.... I play it on my TV with paddles.
Godzilla #12 Posted May 22, 2012 for me, the answer to 'how do you play kaboom on emulator' is 'I don't' It just doesn't zen the same for me as the real deal on real hardware on a tv with nice paddles...
flammingcowz #13 Posted May 22, 2012 I have perfectly working paddles and a copy of this game. I just wanted to try it on an emulator out of curiosity. I guess nothing ever beats the real thing
maiki #14 Posted May 22, 2012 (edited) I still don't quite understand why there should be a difference in lag between Stella + mouse and real system + paddles... Edited May 22, 2012 by maiki
Keatah #15 Posted May 22, 2012 I'm conducting tests that will reveal some issues. Stay tuned.

Keatah #17 Posted May 23, 2012 (edited) See the "Precisely what is wrong with VCS paddle emulation .." thread in the EMULATION section. I have noted 4 specific quantifiable things that need to be addressed. Then Kaboom! should be much more playable with the mouse, and *even* better with the Bliss-a-Box or Stelladapter. http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/198319-precisely-what-is-wrong-with-vcs-paddle-emulation/ Edited May 23, 2012 by Keatah
maiki #18 Posted May 24, 2012 That is walls of text. Is is possible to say that in a few sentences what is needed to do in order to improve anything?

Cobra Commander #22 Posted May 25, 2012 I'm making a new rule for my game room. When ever someone says KABOOM! they must yell it. Check your label the ! is there for a reason.
