I think that Megamania is far more addicting. I mean, Activision games are some of the best ever for the 2600, if not THE best. I especially enjoyed Tennis and many of the other games.

As for Laser Blast..it's not bad but my brother kept trying to get past it and it was f****** tough!

Once you figure out the pattern to Laser Blast, you can play as long as you can stand it.

I've made it to 100,000 when I was really bored.

I don't mind it, but their are better style games like that (Megamania, etc), but I have to agree it is still pretty fun. To bad I've only got it on a HES 2 Pak. :|

It's somewhat entertaining, but Game 1 gets to be so tedious to play after a while, and Game 3 (which provides the only decent level of challenge in this game) whips your butt long before you can even hope to reach the 100,000 point mark.

I will say...

I'd much rather play Laser Blast than eat a piece of dog crap.

But that'd be the only reason I'd play it.

If someone ever presents you with a choice like that, you'd better run :D

I --==REALLY==-- don't understand why Laser Blast gets such ire. I've loved the game since I first played it. It's a perfect example of what makes all great 2600 games, a simple game play premise that gets more challenging. and CRIPES if game one gets too easy for, pat yourself on the back and try a HARDER difficulty. sheesh. And then on those days when u really need to rain down death on all those below you like a merciless omnipotent god, Laser Blast will be there for you. What more can you ask of a game? some people....

The visual effects and sound effects are nice ..... The gameplay is a little above doggie poo poo .. I spent alot of time trying to like this game in 1979 .. especially since I paid $20 for it.

As I've said before in other threads... Game 4 is the game you were supposed to play to earn a patch originally(see manual). It doesn't take very long to get to one million on this level(1.5 hours). There is certainly very little time to yawn at this faster pace. I think game 3 advances you to the same level of difficulty, but you get a couple of slow levels in the beginning to warm up. I believe many folks cheated in earning their patches on game one. With only a photo of the score there was no way to tell which game level you played.

I think it's a great game when compared to other 2k games. It's not nearly as addicting as, say, Kaboom!(also 2k), but it's not nearly as bad as some claim.

Give game 4 a try and be sure to make a video and send it in to Twin Galaxies when you tie the world record! :D

I like Laser Blast. It is not too hard and once you get into a pattern, you could play for a very long time :)

I was the proud winner of an actual Federation of Laser Blasters Patch,

cant remember if I cheated to get it, but I kinda doubt it. I probably

figured they had some way to find out way back then.

I seem to recall !!!!!! appearing on the screen during an electrical storm, so perhaps "frying" might have that effect. I can't remember if it was LaserBlast, but it was the first AcTiVision game that I owned.

Laserblast was truely a Zen-like experience. Once in the groove you could play forever. I earned my patch and 1,000,000 point bar back in 1982.

Once it gets too easy-- change the rules for yourself.

1. Shoot no laser base until it shoots first.

2. Allow all laser bases to get off one shot each before destroying any bases.

3. Combine. Allow all to get off one shot and then as each fires again destroy the offending base.

Yeah, there's a bit of zen in Laser Blast but as you suggest, Kaboom! is the zen master.

Then again, what Laser Blast lacks in intensity it makes up for in duration. I get totally entranced by Kaboom! but it never seems to last very long before I make a mistake. Laser Blast, on the other hand, can go on forever.

I think I get a similar, although less pure, vibe from Video Pinball and Yars' Revenge, and that's part of their charm, as well.

Yar's Revenge suffers from "sudden death" syndrome. You can spend a long time building up a decent score, when you accidentally trigger the "HSWWSH" display. :x

After every shot, you need to keep repeating to yourself "stay off the line..."

It's easy to let that happen when you get into the swirl-blasting zone. Strangely, I didn't know the EXACT conditions needed to set off the HSWWSH until last fall, and I think before that I had only done it 2 or 3 times in my life. Now that I KNOW, it happens at least once in every 5 times I play the game! :x

i've never done it, and dont know how to. never seen it either.

When you destroy the Qotile or Swirl, there is a black vertical line on the "victory" screen that is aligned with the spot where the Qotile/Swirl was killed.

If you move the Yar so the black square in the center of his body is aligned with the vertical black line, and you're on the bottom 1/3 of the screen, after the victory screen, the score will display as HSWWSH and the game will end.

Yeah...back in the day when I first got the cartridge, I thought that it was a bug (pardon the pun). I found out later that it wasn't (in AA 'zine, I think), but they didn't let on how it was done. So I would end up wrecking quite a number of marathon sessions :x :x
