Atari Arcade Trivia

Recommended Posts

In case anyone is interested, I am running some articles this month about Atari's arcade days and I've put together a couple of trivia games about it, will be doing a couple more (1 each week).

Of course if anyone has some more info on Atari's arcade stuff I would be happy to share it. That second link has a detailed timeline history of their arcade productions.

8/10. I had to guess on the Atari Theater Cabinet question and missed one of the pinball firsts. Not too shabby for a guy who's not really into arcade cabs. :)

Looking over the full results so far I guess I might have made them a little too hard :) But I suppose everyone talks a lot more about their console stuff than the arcade cabs.

There were some obscure questions in there, I only knew some of the stuff because I did some investigations into the early Atari coin-op scene awhile back. Most of these questions are not things the average or casual Atari fan would know.

I got 9/11 on the second one. Calling Battlezone a FPS is a real stretch....

I don't see why not. Ed Rotheberg said it was "the first truly first person game" and I don't see how it's not considered a shooter since that's how you score and advance in the game. It has the elements there, even if they are basic by today's standards. Wolfenstein 3D would pull off the same thing years later as both games would have no Y viewing axis, it was just faster paced and had more content to it. But I think the basic premise is the same.

Guess I should also add that I framed the question as "first immersive, off-rails first person experience" instead of FPS to be more specific.

Going to start on Trivia #3 today. Posted a big post about arcade prototypes yesterday here:

whenever I see Ed Logg's credits listed, I never see Super Breakout.

It's not terribly well known but it is true. It was one of the first games he worked on at Atari. Links:
