Ok, who's setup is this? People I know keep showing me this pic, "I bet you'd love to have this....ha ha....."

Sure it's a decent collection, but not nearly enough classic stuff for my tastes. Plus, he has a lot of duplication, and is missing several of what I'd think were obvious must haves.

Personally, I can't imagine a setup with so many light gun capable systems hooked up to an LCD/Plasma. :(

I'm sure all the criticism will make whoever's collection that is willing to post here.

Obvious subjective "flaws" aside (btw: is that a CRT tele on the left?), this is a kick ass setup! I especially love the organization and the fact every cubby hole is lit!

It's a very nice setup, but you are right--there are way too many duplicates. For example, having a NES toaster, a NES top loader, and a Famicom hooked up all at once seems to be a waste of space. Likewise, there's not a lot of point in having the PS3, PS2, and the PS1 all hooked up--could at least do with removing the PS1. PC Engine DUO-R--why is there a need to still have the PC Engine and the PC Engine CD hooked up? Likewise, the Genesis 1, and the Genesis 2--put one of them away, heh.

Because he HAS them! It's a display!

Is there a Colecovision? Intellivision? Vectrex? Astrocade? Odyssey 2? 5200? I don't even see a heavy sixer.

There must be another set of shelves behind the camera. But it is a very attractive display, well designed for viewing and access, and at least the 7800 is front and center...

Gee, sorry if I hurt their feelings with all my "criticism."

The point I was making is against the people I know who aren't in the hobby and think this is a really big deal. When they give me the "I bet you'd love this!" I'm thinking "actually I have about 80% of that and a lot more." Granted, I'm sure we aren't seeing everything here either.

Still, I stand by my CRT comment. Anything without native component output should not be on a widescreen HDTV, and anything with lightgun support CAN'T be played on anything but a CRT. No House of the Dead 2 for Dreamcast? No Duck Hunt for any of those NES he has? Sad.........

I said it was decent, and we probably aren't seeing everything anyway.

The worst part is all those SD consoles on an HD TV, with no upscaler in sight.

The awful-image-quality will ruin all of the niceness of the display.

Impressive? Sure.

Attractive? No doubt.

Practical? I don't think so, Tim.

The TV is too high, for one thing. I know the big fad is to put the TV high on a wall or above a fireplace or something, but ultimately that means you have to crane your neck upward for hours at a time. Not fun. Also, the lit cabinets are nice, but I hope they can be shut off if the lights go out. I'd hate to have a few dozen lights glaring at me when I'm playing. The duplication makes no sense, and I don't see any room for expansion.

I admire the aesthetics, but I'd make some major changes if this were my rig. Still, I'm thinking there are some ideas I could probably incorporate into my setup.

Just to be clear, I wasn't ragging on the guy who owns this setup. I guess I'm ragging on the people who assume this must be the end all, be all of gaming. Like I said, it's a nice set up, and he should be proud, but I'll bet we have dozens if not hundreds of AA members who would give it a run for the money.

In retrospect, I'm guessing the redundancy may have more to do with temporarily filling spaces than anything else.

I don't have enough money to get a set up like that and don't own all those consoles. That being said....I'd definetely have a Colecovision in there.

I got annoyed when I saw this covered on the internet, everywhere.

There are people with better, more practical setups out there. They're who needs to be shown off, so people mimic the right setup...

My setup is awesome. I made shelves out of milk crates and zipties, and stuck all the consoles in it.

There are handles! Portable setup! >;]

Gots me an old style entertainment center that has a space for a TV, shelves to the right side and a few drawers under the TV.

Got a little CRT TV. 2600 and 5200 atop, then on the shelves a 7800, Genesis, Jag/Jag CD and an XEGS. Got an 800XL sitting on the floor in front.

Drawers are good for storing controllers and cables.

Works for me. :)

This is a sweet setup. I might have to make me something like this. The shelving would not be that dificult to make. My question is this, how does he have all of the systems hooked up? With that many systems, you'd have to have a bank of game switches. I can't see any obvious ones in the photos, though it looks like he has a pretty expensive stereo system there that undoubtedly upconverts his signals to HDMI. I have a pelican game switch that works well for me as a game switch, that I then put through a stereo, but there are only 8 ports and it's a manual switch. What other switch solutions might one use for this? I suppose a custom-made gameswitch would be the ultimate solution. You could make it with as many ports as you like, but from looking into makign one myself, it's an involved job because you have to bult each port circuitry individually.

Power is another concern. With that many systems plugged in, you'd have a lot of idling power adapters. You'd have to set up a proper a safe power solution than just a bunch of power strips. Optimally, you'd want a power strip that shut down plugs when it sensed when where wasn't any draw.

You also have the concern of causing ground loops with that many things plugged in (a ground loop might cause an audio buzz on your stereo and can be frustrating to try and solve).

Also, there's the overload concern. To be safe you'd probably have to build your power solution as part of your home remodel project with a cirguit breaker devoted just to your game wall. Electricians rejoice.

I want to see it with all the controller wires sticking out and strewn all over.

Not to mention the unholy mess of power and video cables choking out the back!

If you check my post above, the link has a video where he briefly talks about how they are hooked up and the switches.

does he talk about how awful most of this stuff looks on that TV?

or how bad his neck probably hurts after playing, since it's mounted like 40 feet up on the wall?

You never know, maybe he has a chair mounted up on the opposite wall, with a ladder leaning against it to get there (above the other shelf of games)...
