Value of Mario Bros. (7800) sextupled in 3 days

Recommended Posts

Common in terms of numbers when compared to other games but the Mario name places it in demand more than those other titles with a similar number in circulation. This is also true for the 2600 version of the game.

The "Mario" name makes these Atari titles sometimes bid far past what any sane bidder would actually pay in terms of fair market value. On the original auction, the high bidder placed 8 of the 20 total bids, including a pointless quintuple bid stack. Even sealed, it's not worth $77.50, much less $499.99. Hopefully no fools will be parted from their money.

Just like a fool, and his money ... All the love has gone.

An 80's Wang Chung song from their Mosaic album - Michael McDonald sings back up, it's great.

Random firings ...

While this is clearly ridiculous, it also hasn't sold for that much and likely never will. All this guy did is pay too much in the original auction and now he has put it up for a price he will never get. Sadly, this happens more and more on Ebay, although it used to be mainly isolated to NES stuff. As for your second comment, you already overpay (at least based on your previous posts here bragging about some of the overpriced stuff you have won lately) for most of what you're buying on Ebay by a wide margin, so in a sense, you are investing in video games, albeit at a level that will see you losing most of your investment when you go to sell someday.

Sold for $77.50: eBay Auction -- Item Number: 1809075730741?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=180907573074&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

Buyer relisted for $499.99: eBay Auction -- Item Number: 3209311996591?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=320931199659&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

Maybe I should stop trading stocks and invest into Atari 7800 games instead?

Flipping and unrealistic prices are nothing new.

I would have more respect for the seller if he VGA graded it and then listed at that price. I'm not a VGA whore, but encased and graded apparently adds some value.

I don't think many sealed collectors collect 7800 and even fewer have an interest in VGA graded 7800. Not only that, but this particular copy has some pretty significant box damage, so I don't think it would grade all that well.

Sorry, didn't look at the auction for quality. Speaking in general terms.

Either way Atari Agers don't care about VGA so much, or about $500 games worth $30 or whatever. But the person who is paying $500 for a game with 'Mario' in the title (or even if they sold it for $200) probably does care about VGA grading.
