Donkey Kong Jr Arcade question.

Not long ago I picked up a Donkey Kong Jr arcade machine and have so far really enjoyed playing the game with the correct hardware. However, the board with the birds dropping eggs has upset me at every turn. Is there some pattern I'm missing to the way the birds fly when the turn down? They come down from the hole at the top of the level and drop what seems to be a random distance before turning back toward you, making it very hard to get across that hole to finish the level.

 

Any advice I'm missing would be great and I would be forever thankful.
