macgoo #1 Posted July 7, 2012 I tried looking on Atari-Legend but they only have exclusive monochrome game search function search not mono compatible as was hinted at in an old thread? Also I don't want to know about PD games or shareware, only proper full price games sold in shops. Not bothered if they are mono only or mono and colour. What I do want though is arcade/action games not adventures or strategy games. There probably isn't that many so I was going to do youtube videos of them
simonsunnyboy #2 Posted July 7, 2012 I don't think there were any at all. All titles were either color or both mono/color but none were mono only. Maybe Oxyd and Esprit by Dongleware count for your point of view but those had playable shareware like copies given into PD that were complete but you needed to buy the manual to play them through. All others I know about, also work in color such as Starglider or the Sierra titles.
macgoo #3 Posted July 8, 2012 But that is exactly what I am looking for, commercial non text adventure/strategy games sold for the ST that worked in monochrome and color mode, like Starglider which you mention. Didn't mean mono only games, that is something I can search for on Atari Legend, however I can't search for games which just support mono as well as color mode on there. macgoo #5 Posted July 8, 2012 Thanks that's what I was looking for Not home and dry though as sadly, as someone stated in there, the crackers don't make mono friendly cracktros for mono friend games (this is why I HATE cracked games in my collection but sadly sometimes that's all there is)
ParanoidLittleMan #6 Posted July 9, 2012 (edited) Here is one shorter list, but with some titles missing at other, usual lists: List of monochrome (High ST res.) compatible games on this adaptation page : Alpha Waves BattleZone Black Cauldron Bolo Boston Bombclub Brataccas Colorado Corruption Crystal Castles Crystals of Arborea Fish Flight Simulator 2 Guild of Thieves JET Journey to the Centre of the Earth Missile Command Mission Elevator Moon Patrol No Limit 2 Oxyd - diverse vresions Phoenix Proflight Pro Tennis Tour (aka Great Courts) Robotron 2084 Secret of Monkey Island Silicon Dreams - Trilogy : Eden, Snowball, Worm Starblade Starglider Starglider 2 Stone Age Targhan Ultima III-IV ? Windsurf Willy Zak McKracken ... Usually, Sierra games have monochrom support too. But I need to fix launchers of those games that mono mode work ... All games are comercial. May DL them here: http://atari.8bitchip.info/fromhd.php - hard disk adaptations, but many will work from floppy too. General rule may be: 80% of Silmarils games are mono compatible. Then many of by Atari published, mostly coded by Andromeda. You can go on atarimania.com and look for mono compatible ones with advanced search - pretty complete database. P.S. : I don't think that many cracks were made so, that mono mode is lost. It happened mostly because they discarded mono specific files, if they existed, in usual effort to squeeze as much titles on floppy as possible. In any case, I think that collecting all mono compatible games is possible right now. We have STX images for all of them, likely. Only case where I was in dilemma was Block Out (3D Tetris), where I saw filenames of monochrome screens, menus, but there were no such files on cracks. Later I found STXes of original, and no mono files too. So, that idea was not realised, obviously. Edited July 9, 2012 by ParanoidLittleMan
+DarkLord #7 Posted July 9, 2012 I'm fairly sure that only Ultima 2 and 3 will work in mono - don't think the others do...
macgoo #8 Posted July 13, 2012 I couldn't get a single commercial non RPG/Adventure game to work in mono mode on STEem so never mind. Starglider 1 and 2 are just plain broken if run in mono mode for me.
+DarkLord #9 Posted July 17, 2012 They work great on real ST hardware though!
Marius #10 Posted July 24, 2012 It was already mentioned, but Monkey Island is really epic on Mono. In color it is great ... yeah, but the mono graphics... that is something special.
ParanoidLittleMan #11 Posted July 30, 2012 Here is pretty complete list, with 269 titles - and I removed all text only adventures, as it is nonsense to list them here. +DarkLord #12 Posted July 30, 2012 Well, maybe have a subtitled heading for the text only games, because they are compatible? Oh, aren't most of the Zork games text only too? Thanks.

I remove Zorks too. ParanoidLittleMan #16 Posted August 1, 2012 That was intended to be joke, but I still expect that list . Just pointed that most of people like some graphic too.
macgoo #17 Posted August 1, 2012 I already tried many of the arcade games listed there (moon patrol, starglider, starglider 2 etc) and using multiple disk images and not a single one worked on any emulator I tried when you start it in mono. You have a hell of a lot of adventures on there, fish/jinxter/myth/silicon dreams etc and a lot of RPG stuff too
OBO #18 Posted August 1, 2012 @macgoo. Forget about using them when they are on floppy, the crackers made changes most of the time (like intro screen) that prevents the games from running in ST-high. AFAIK, only Ppera's adaptations retains the ability to work on mono screen.
ParanoidLittleMan #19 Posted August 1, 2012 @macgoo. Forget about using them when they are on floppy, the crackers made changes most of the time (like intro screen) that prevents the games from running in ST-high. AFAIK, only Ppera's adaptations retains the ability to work on mono screen. I disagree. Most of cracks will work in mono. Only in rare cases they removed mono related files. But second statement may be true - I do mono support by hard disk adapts - although not from beginning, so some older ones may not work.
OBO #20 Posted August 1, 2012 You forget about the "I add a nice intro screen with scrolltext & overscan when the game is started" issue.
+DarkLord #21 Posted August 1, 2012 Can't speak for every title but many I have tried, (examples given Starglider 1 and 2) work just fine in mono on my STacy. I'm running them from 2 and 4 gig SDcards via the Ultrasatan. Sounds like its just an emulator problem?
ParanoidLittleMan #22 Posted August 2, 2012 I'm sorry, but going into too much generalisation leads usually nowhere ... If you want to say that cracks usually screw up mono playability, or miss mono files, give some examples. Even some fancy intro, made only for color must not crash in mono mode - you will just see some garbage, but can go on. Same stays for Stargliders: some cracks work even not on color system (on certain machines). Because region restrictions. And it is not emulator problem for sure. Just problem of confusing things. Honestly, I made this lists because beeing tired of usual shallow lists and guessings instead testings. And it took pretty much time. People make most mistakes when try to get why something happens. With Atari games things are just complicated. Too much really stoopid coding - like Player Manager (Anco) - original crashes after little play on 4MB machines. Just pitty. macgoo #23 Posted August 2, 2012 Problem is you can't have a mono AND colour monitor attached to the ST to swap willy nilly so using them just out of curiosity is a massive pain in the ass on an ST with two monitors on one desk, it's just not feasible at all to have that as a permanent set up for most people. The intros don't stop the games I tried from working, if you know the game you want is number 3 on the menu you just press three and it dumps you back to the GEM desktop and you double click the icon to boot them so they should work. I also tried games where the only intro is like a boot block virus checker and it comes on the same number of disks (ie 1) as the original. Zip zilch nada nothing. It's a real shame for people who are just interested in seeing some mono arcade/action games.
ParanoidLittleMan #24 Posted August 3, 2012 Some people had (and maybe still have) multinorm monitors capable for color and mono too. Then, many use emulators, and just want to see how it looks in mono. And few has only mono monitor currently. On Falcon, TT you can set ST-high res (mono) on color monitors, and see how it looks. - Well, works mostly only after some patching in game and with special launcher.
