Jacques
Hi Guys, would someone be so kind to try these, please? Edited May 14, 2020 by Jacques
Rybags
Rybags-Ferrari85.xex That's about 8 minutes worth of processing, Floyd dither, no other option changes or modification to the pic beforehand. Looks OK in the preview while the work's done but not the greatest once you see it up close. Red is probably the worst colour to try and represent on our computer in such a pic, and the saturation loss at higher lumas doesn't help either. 5
+gnusto
I got about the same result, using a bit lighter Floyd dither, but that burnt red color is going to come through fairly pink on an Atari (PAL palette). ferrari.xex 5
Jacques
@Rybags' conversion looks spot on! @gnusto: I think yours is missing some part of original picture, that can be see on the left side. Thank you both Guys! How about title-winning Williams from 2nd picture? Edited May 14, 2020 by Jacques
Rybags
Running now. It started with a distance over 20 is now about 17 where the first one started around high 5. It's been a while but generally under 14 means it'll usually be a good result. OK, low 16 now and it's looking better but some undesirable scanline artifacts. I'll try and give it an hour or so and post later. Processing with no mod or option other than Flloyd dither.
Rybags
In progress, distance around 13.868. I get the feeling I'll be stuck with these artifacts. Will let it go longer and see if there's any improvement. Rybags-Villeneuve-Williams1.xex.xex 4
Rybags
Rybags-Villeneuve-Williams2.xex That's after about 2 hours active with 6 threads, 330 million evaluations and distance down to about 13.31. To the point where it'd often go almost a minute without any found improvement. Would be nice if the yellow band at the bottom of the visor was there. This pic could do with some massaging before going in - first thing would be to get rid of the watermark, then probably get rid of the brown in the grass then even out the tyres a bit which might cut down the scanline artifacts and free up a bit of colour to get that yellow into the helmet. 56 unique colours Edited May 14, 2020 by Rybags 6

The original isn't a strong aspect ratio match for the Atari, so I cropped it with a slight enlargement of the car, which is the important detail in the picture. The closer the picture focuses on what's important, the more color/detail you get out of that part in the conversion, even providing for a mask used within Rasta.

Some think greyscale is sort of cheating, but they can still be very challenging. Sure, the Black Album (Metallica) was easy1, but try Janet Jackson's Rythm Nation 1814. Haven't figured it out yet. I want the whole aura/halo/glare around here head without vissible horizontal lines. No PMG blocks. Either with or without dither. Even downscaling to 6 (!) colors, I can't get it to look good. This one is great!! You really have to look for slight deviations. 1 It was kind of a joke. Gunstar
Regardless if it's cheating for color source images, if the source is B/W, like my guess is this image is, how is it cheating anyway?
ivop
Some think it's cheating because a maximum of eight colors is supposed to be easier, which it is not, IMHO.
