ilmenit #701 Posted September 4, 2016 There's no set time. I did one of my best images today with only 150 million iterations. I have had stuff run for over 5 billion and they don't look half as good. I also unfortunately cannot explain what kind of picture will work, because I often think something will look great and it can't work. Just takes a lot of time, patience, and experimentation. Indeed. Atari just cannot display all the pictures nicely because of how hardware sprites work and how color registers can be changed. After some experimenting you quickly find out if picture is promising or what changes must be applied in preprocessing to make it look better.
Rybags #702 Posted September 4, 2016 I had a sort of cool looking "Gates of hell" going all last night. Problem is the scaled down version looks crap @ 160 res, I could have saved the trouble by just scaling up the preview before I left it running. emkay #703 Posted September 5, 2016 Rybags is right. This conversion looks OK in just 120 million evaluations but without the ability to portray the eyes the story of the picture is missing. What you can do is to find a mix of useful colours and possible details. And, what do you think about this result? wolf-dither-emkay.xex
+JAC! #704 Posted September 5, 2016 Short reminder for those new to the thread: Please use <author>_<image>.xex as the naming convention, so we can kept the collection intact.
Rybags #705 Posted September 5, 2016 That wolf pic might turn out better if the eyes and moon are made the same colour.
+Stephen #706 Posted September 7, 2016 This one turned out awesome (IMHO). 100,000 iterations, no dither, yuv colourspace. Original images came from http://www.kotaku.com.au/2016/02/one-site-is-dedicated-to-the-beautiful-graphics-of-the-amiga/, no copyright infringement intended. +Stephen #708 Posted September 7, 2016 Man that's some pretty purple. I'm pretty severely colourblind, so things like this with very high contrast look good to me.
Jinroh #709 Posted September 7, 2016 I agree! Really pleasing. ^^
+Stephen #710 Posted September 7, 2016 Few more Amiga conversions (source pictures and xex included). The only thing I did was resize the images down to 320 pixels, and then make sure they were centered in a 240 pixel canvas. +JAC! #712 Posted September 8, 2016 Looks like our mistake all the time was to convert stuff from and inferior machine (C64) instead of copying from the best :-) (No flame wars please, I love C64 too)

You really need the 16 lumas of Graphics 9 to get this to work.

+Stephen #715 Posted September 22, 2016 Hello! Ready for next challenge? Shouldn't be hard, I think. I'll give it a shot. I'll adjust the aspect ration to get the most of the usable image on screen without squashing it.
Xuel #716 Posted September 22, 2016 Agree with Stephen on aspect ratio. A few attempts on a cropped section: /dither=chess /contrast=100 /contrast=100 /palette=Palettes/altirra.act /s=5 /dither=none /brightness=-20 /dither=knoll /contrast=100 suit.zip
+Stephen #717 Posted September 22, 2016 I'm having difficulty with this. There were a lot of jpg artifacts on the image even before rescaling it. I tried cleaning them up and some quick tweaks, but it also doesn't like the colour palette.
+Stephen #718 Posted September 22, 2016 OK - this is as good as the initial test is going to get. RDJr.xex

Rybags #720 Posted September 23, 2016 With the suit pic I think what could help: - remove the non-white colour components from the shirt. - make the background colour same as the most common colour within the shirt.
+Stephen #721 Posted September 23, 2016 I'm curious, have you ever tried anything like the Enchroma glasses? Never heard of them. My results from their test were: STRONG DEUTAN What is a Deutan? Deutans are people with deuteranomaly, a type of red-green color blindness in which the green cone doesn’t detect enough green but is too sensitive to yellows, oranges, and reds. As a result, greens, yellows, oranges, reds, and browns may appear similar, especially in low light. It can also be difficult to tell the difference between blues and purples, or pinks and grays.
emkay #722 Posted September 23, 2016 I wonder about this. Particular those pictures do not fit in terms of aspect ratio and colourisation. So some external help is needed On the other hand.... such pictures would be very thankful for a "hires" converter with multiplexed PMg. emkay-suit.xex
