Gunstar #1 Posted July 10, 2012 I just completed Highlander last night, with no cheats (the same way as I did 10-15 years ago). I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it 10-15 years ago too, and it had been long enough that I had forgotten most of the game, so it was a fun experience to get through it again. I really wish the sequals had been released. I don't know why so many think this game is sub-par, they say it controls terribly, but I never had any problems with the controls (it does help in fights to have the sword, before that it can be difficult). Also, I highly recommend using the pro controller to play since all six buttons are used for different attack and defensive moves and the shoulder buttons turn your character left and right so it's very easy and fluid movement with the pro controller. Good game with far superior graphics and control to the similair 'Alone in the dark' games. The only down side to it for me is the lack of replayability once you've completed it, except if you wait 10-15 years like I did. the whole reason i decided to try it again was I never played it before on my large projection screen, it's awsome looking on a 120" screen. I'm really hoping that Songbird's last jaguar mystery project is the lost (and completed) sequal to this game (originally planned as a trilogy). Chilly Willy #2 Posted July 11, 2012 The REAL question is: where do you get a pro controller for less than $100????
+Stephen #3 Posted July 11, 2012 Damn - if I sold my Jag collection piece by piece I could nearly pay my 2006 Miata loan off!
Gunstar #4 Posted July 11, 2012 (edited) yeah, luckily I bought my pro-controller new back around '96 for $30. I've had to replace a couple of the CBAZYX buttons a few years back (used rubber contact bubble/buttons from an aftermarket DC controller, I think Madcatz, at least the name fit). But it still works like new. I have sold my Jag collection (just games and extras like flashcarts/skunkboards, keeping the core system) a couple of seperate times to keep me afloat in very lean times. I'm just rebuilding it now. Highlander definately is a LOT better to control with the pro-controller, it was definately made with it in mind. I can see why some people may think the controls aren't good with a standard controller, though the first time I played it through way back when I used a standard controller and didn't find it too difficult then, but the Z, Y and X buttons REALLY help becuase you get two different block moves and one evade. +doctorclu #5 Posted July 11, 2012 I've played through Highlander using cheats and a rubber chicken and I have to say... fun game. Maybe one day I'll play it for real. Been meaning to get the cartoon series that this game was based on. And a second game of this would be awesome!!
Gunstar #6 Posted July 11, 2012 it's much more fun without cheats, just get the sword before you have to fight anyone, besides the two guards in the beginning (one comes at you at the start and one at the back gate, luckily they die with one kick or two punches). Gunstar #8 Posted July 13, 2012 (edited) I read an article some years back that interviewed Lore Design, and unfortunately only the second game in the trilogy was finished, but never published, all they had was story boards done on the third part, so if it is ever "found" only the second part could ever be released. But I'd be very happy with just it, it's still better than just the one part. Actually, Lore Design originally planned it as one long game on multiple discs, but Atari in all their wisdom and greed decided to make more money by splitting it all up. Though, in hind-sight, that may have turned out to be the better choice for us in the end, otherwise we may never have seen any of it, since Atari and the Jag went under before the the "trilogy" was finished. We may have never seen any of it (at least not for years until it was "found" and published by someone like Songbird). kid_vidiot #10 Posted July 16, 2012 I posted this in another thread on here a few years ago: My pick for this thread topic would be one of my favorite Jaguar games and one of the most maligned, Highlander CD. I think the major reason it gets a bad rap is that the vast majority of people give up on the game before ever getting out of the opening village. They either get killed by the guards in the village because of the slow and unorthodox combat, or they leave the village the wrong way and get shot by the snipers in the guard tower. Once you do get the hang of the controls and dispatch the guards and leave the village the right way, the game begins to open up in a wonderful way (especially after you get your sword which makes combat much easier). The whole game has a very alien feel to it. People get frustrated because they think it is an action game when it is really more of a puzzle and exploration game. It's really too bad that the final product is only like 1/3 of the actual game and the "sequels" were never released.
Felyx #11 Posted July 16, 2012 HI, I have both the game and pro controller but so far did not fall in love for Highlanders. Your topic encourage me to play it again. Regarding Songbirds mystery projects, why not a sequel but keep in mind there are still tons of unreleased Jaguar games floating around. I heard he could possibly works on Dactyl Joust. Gunstar #12 Posted July 17, 2012 I would prefer Dactyl Joust and a lot of other lost games over the 2nd Highlander, I just think the lost Highlander or Ishar 3 games were more likely as they are known to be finished and ready to go, if "found." I'd never heard of a chance for Dactyl Joust. The one thing that is for sure, is that the last mystery project at Songbird will be a CD release, that much was answered in a recent interview. i have no idea if D.J. was intended originally as a cart or cd release.

Gunstar #15 Posted July 18, 2012 (edited) I heard he could possibly works on Dactyl Joust. That's news. I had understood that Dactyl Joust needed a LOT of work to be considered playable. If anything can be gleened from that 10 second Dactyl Joust movie on Youtube, it looks like there's a lot there, but since it's so short and just showing one bird and rider swooping down toward another, it's tuff to say. But it looks good, with buildings below, everything textured and very smooth frame-rate. It could be a glimps of something finished or nearly so, or it just might be all you see and nothing more, maybe there is no game play yet. But from what I had heard from others attempting to contact and interact with High Voltage Software was basically they weren't going to let anything get released. But then there was something in the air, it could be that they were already in the midst of a deal with Songbird so were just snubbing anyone else. And now that I think about it,IIRC, Dactyl Joust might have been a title listed in an ad for the Jaguar CD unit; the "it's a jungle out there" CD unit ad. So if it's CD, then it doesn't count it out as a possiblity from Songbird. Edited July 18, 2012 by Gunstar
Gunstar #16 Posted July 18, 2012 I think it was Ted Tachequi??? who said he know who had the second Highlander game. I don't recall any names offhand. Was he a part of Lore Design? I'll have to look at the credits again to see who was involved.
