sheath #26 Posted July 12, 2012 (edited) The TurboGrafx-16 is a must have for any fans of 90s gaming, 16-bit gaming, shooters and Arcade games in general. The US library is fairly small, but it is made up of more unique and worthwhile games than not. I think you wil want to get a CD-ROM and Super System Card relatively soon. After 1990 NEC really focused on the CD games and the CDs are region free. If you don't pick up the CD-ROM you will have to find a Turbo Booster to get Composite out, the TG16 is RF only for some silly reason. Rex Dart #27 Posted July 12, 2012 which handheld, if any, best handles TG16 roms. i really don't want to pay $5 a game for iphone ports with touch controls. Nintendo DS and Sony PSP do pretty well in my experience. There's an emulator out for Android too, but I haven't tried it yet. Too cheap to spend the $4. SlowCoder #31 Posted July 13, 2012 Got the machine yesterday. I think only one controller and no power supply. Did come with Splatterhouse, though, so I think that's good. $15. Walked out of the store with that and a complete NES with about 8 controllers for a total $30. Was feeling pretty crummy yesterday, so didn't get a chance to really look at the TG16. Hoping to plug it in tonight.
Austin #32 Posted July 13, 2012 Wow, incredible deal if it came with Splatterhouse! I think you should be able to track down a universal A/C adaptor for it. And yeah, one controller is pretty standard for this thing--it only has one port and you will need to get the Turbo Tap if you want to expand it further. SlowCoder #33 Posted July 13, 2012 Machine started first time. I used my Genesis PS with it. Splatterhouse looks pretty interesting. Knives and chairs trying to kill me. LOL! I think this machine definitely deserves a look for the TG flash card! Funny that what would appear to be Turbo switches on the controller buttons actually appear to do the opposite, delaying the fire time.
Austin #34 Posted July 13, 2012 Funny that what would appear to be Turbo switches on the controller buttons actually appear to do the opposite, delaying the fire time. They are definitely turbo switches, with two rates of fire. Some games however seem to try and circumvent the use of them. In one recent PC Engine title I received, "Youkai Douchuki" by Namco, attempting to fire with the turbo switches does nothing--your character won't fire at all. I don't think I ever used the turbo function on Splatterhouse, so I wonder if the same thing applies there (it's also by Namco).

Yeah, looks like just the game is going for around $40 on eBay, and the console would go for at least that much again. I think I'll be looking to get the Turbo Everdrive soon. Is it only available board-only? I couldn't find it at StoneAgeGamer assembled. I wouldn't want to destroy SplatterHouse. I'm also interested in getting my hands on Blazing Lazers, which really looks cool!

I wouldn't want to destroy SplatterHouse. Yeah, it's the board only. They don't have a way to feasibly house it, so it's bare and that's it. Check out the flash cart thread--there was an alternative someone proposed.
sheath #37 Posted July 14, 2012 I think the idea with the Turbo Everdrive is that you will put it in the slot, close the tray door and never remove it again. I'm guessing KRIKzz will have a way to load CDs without removing the card that is amiable. Mine shipped already so I will find out when it gets here, I'm also curious because it is said to be untested with the DUO/R or modded units and there is a power usage question. It would stink if my region modded DUO/R didn't work with this at all.
lushgirl_80 #38 Posted July 15, 2012 Turbografx 16 is cool. Personally I'd rather get the Turbo Express. Alot of their games are funner to play on a portable system, like Alien Crush! I so need to get one of those again. Never owned the actual system(although I remember playing it alot at Sears when it first came out),but I did have a Turbo Express awhile back and it was cool. Arkhan #39 Posted July 16, 2012 You don't need an everdrive. Just get a NeoFlash or something. You got a great deal on the system. Basically every game you'll come across is pretty good. Some are kinda average, but there are a ton of excellent ones too. and yes, it is an 8 bit processor, but it is a hopped up one. It's a 65C02 running at 7mhz. So, it's a top tier 8 bit cpu. Plus it has more onscreen colors than a Genesis, so, yayyyyy colors. Get China Warrior, Keith Courage, Bonk, and Blazing Lazers. The TG-16 is my favorite console ever. I might have a spare Keith Courage. If you want it, you can have it for the cost of shipping.
StoneAgeGamer #40 Posted July 16, 2012 You don't need an everdrive. Just get a NeoFlash or something. I assume people want a Turbo EverDrive because of the microSD card interface. True, you don't NEED a Turbo EverDrive, but there is a reason people want one.
goldenegg #41 Posted July 16, 2012 You don't need an everdrive. Just get a NeoFlash or something. Given that the NeoFlash cart is more expensive and is an absolute pain to use, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I say this as someone who has owned the NeoFlash cart for the past 2 years.

I've owned one for 3+ years now. I don't have any problem with it. You just strip the headers and pad the ROM with existing utilities. Easy.

The problems come in flashing the cart. Their USB programmer is known to have problems on many computers. In fact, only 2 of my 6 computers can be used to flash the cart. The other 4 product disconnect errors.
Arkhan #44 Posted July 16, 2012 Weird. I've used it on every machine I own, ranging from a 10 year old laptop, to a recently built Windows 7 machine with no problems. How old is the software you are using? It's been updated a bunch of times. The latest software is fairly solid. Coupled with some of the newer ROM utilities out there, it works very well. Not many others on the PCEngine forums seem to have that kind of issue. They've often had some other PEBKAC issues though.
goldenegg #45 Posted July 16, 2012 I've gone through all the software updates and they don't make a difference. I'm not playing with it anymore though. I have it flashed how I want it and will be using the Turbo Everdrive for all future needs.
Arkhan #46 Posted July 16, 2012 you want to sell the NeoFrash on the cheap? I could always use more home-brew testing fodder. One for roundeye, one for Japan!

xDragonWarrior #49 Posted July 29, 2012 Yes it is a really great console and you shouldn't hesitate to get one.i got one with the Turbobooster and 4 games fir $10 and LOVE it. there are great games like Galaga '90,Dungeon explorer,Blazing lasers, Neutopia(if you care for a good Zelda clone),Splatterhouse, plus with the expensive Turbo CD, best retro waste of time(the good kind) you'll ever have! YAGRS #50 Posted July 31, 2012 I wonder if the turbo express can get a screen mod similar to the nomad mods. Since the games are so much more portable compared to genesis titles, it might be worthwhile to try. ...I just don't want to be the first one to screw up his turbo express. They're expensive to replace. Someone on the PC Engine FX forums has been doing LCD screen mods. He can even mod a Turbo Express to output to a TV. Someone also just came up with an external controller mod for the Turbo Express, but I think it disables the controls on the system. I don't think I ever used the turbo function on Splatterhouse, so I wonder if the same thing applies there (it's also by Namco). No, you can use turbo on Splatterhouse. That's the way I always played it, because I'm a cheater and all that
