so i just won an auction for a cd unit, the cd does not spin, been doing some reading and all points to a busted /stripped gear, of course the laser could be bad on top of that, but any way, any success stories about getting these back up and running? and info, tips, etc, is appreciated, thanks!

There is a guy on eBay who does this service...been meaning to send mine for a while now. I don't know him personally to vouch for him, but his eBay feedback is well in the positive. Hope that helps.

I've fixed one and I've killed one. Honestly, for $59 (the guy on eBay) I call that a bargain. Even if it had only minimal issues they are a PITA for a repairman. To me profiting only $30 when all is said and done just isn't worth it. The lasers run $20ish. He must love doing it and have done it allot to offer it, and at that price.

It does appear that he charges less for just the gears, and slightly more if it needs a laser.

thanks axe! well it does appear to be a bargain all the way around,i have repaired sega cd's (fuse replacement, drive off track) but yeah after looking at some guides on the lens replacement, does seem to be pretty involved. and im not a fan of messing with those lil ribbon cables lol.

Yup, quite easy to rip, and that's how I killed one. $20something for a cable and 100% wasted when I ripped it trying to put it in.

Black grid Sega games rule!

I do love T16, but I am very afraid of getting into the money pit that is the cd drive. Won't the everdrive support the cd games anyway?

Hmm.. to avoid starting a new T16 thread, I'll ask here. Anyone commend someone that does an av mod for the t16? I see turbo boosters are floating around 100 on epay.

There is little effort when it comes to A/V "mods" on the TG. Connect a couple of wires up to the video/audio out pins where the expansion module would normally go, and you've got your A/V capability. Jibbajabba had a tutorial on how to do it on his website, but I don't remember the link to it.

If finances are an issue, you can use "backups".

No, I do not think that is even possible. For one, games would be lacking their soundtracks (most utilized CD audio). Second, the Turbo and PC Engine CD expansions required the System Card 2 to be inserted in the card slot in order for it to even function at all (3.0 if you want DUO Super CD-ROM support).

NEC made a PC drive that is white in color and looks exactly like the TG-CD unit.

You can buy them online. It is not too hard to move the sled and laser assembly from the PC drive to the TG drive.

That is what I did about a year ago and it has been working great since.

I even purchased another drive and I keep it in a zip-lock bag as a back up, just in case I need it.

I'll look for the drive model number and edit this post with it.

It is called the CDR35D. Reading a post I made a pcenginefx.com, I remember finding this in an electronics store for $5.

Awesome. It worked so well I ordered the backup drive on the internet.

I find it interesting people think CD support might be possible, if it was it would be clearly and loudly promoted as a feature dontcha think?

Flashcards designed to load ROMS do not load CD images or ISO's. They are completely different loading mechanisms as well CD games need to be loaded through their perspective hardware (TG CD add on or in case of the Everdrive MD Sega CD attachment) as their is addition hardware that the CD games utilize. Not to mention CD games are huge compared to cartridges in most cases. Although the TurboEverdrive will take up to a 32 GB SD card that is hardley needed as the entire TG16/PCengine library sits on my SDcard under 1GB lol. Yes my card is loaded and ready as I pre-ordered form StoneAgeGamer.

Any flashcart that ever comes out that can load and play both ROMS and ISO's have no doubt you will be clearly informed of it.

I am NOT intending to insult or belittle anyone, just attempting to give some information and help people understand.

Yeah, but they do support the CD System cards. :)

In fact there are some CD games that require the system card 1.0

I wouldn't even know how to get one of those, so the flash cards are the only way to play it.

Altered Beast I think is one....... (?)

Yes I am well aware, I didn't mention it though as I was just trying to be clear but yeah at least that is one more thing it will take care of, just like the EverdriveMD will load a different region BIOS for the SegaCD in case someone wants to boot a different region CD title on their Sega Genesis /CD combo. I was only attempting to clarify the types of games it will load. I am also very happy Krikzz worked it so it will load TG16 OR PCengine games without need of the rare and expensive adapter that use to be required to play Japanese games on TG16, that in itself is worth the cost of the TurboEverdrive and is the standout feature IMHO.

Of course they support the System Cards. They're just HuCards like any other.

to get a System Card 1.0, you just need to get one off the internet from someone selling it. They're fairly common place.

Play the HuCard Altered Beast. It's just as good, if not better.

Yes that is great. My older flash card lets you set region is software before flashing. Works great and makes everything easy.

I do have two of those purple region adapters for the TG16. I think people call them "Barney's"

Still would rather have it on a flash card. Its just easier. Flash cards / carts really have me spoiled!

So, put the Altered Beast ROM on the flash card. :D

Apologies. I know the Sega CD was a hardware upgrade in addition to storage. I was under the impression that the Turbo CD was merely a storage medium drive. It would be nice to not have to worry about what cd driver card you have for whatever game. I only really ever wanted to play Forgotten Worlds on it since I heard it was considerably different.

System Card 3 or an Arcade Card makes you good to go for any game. 2.0 card CD games will work with a 3 or Arcade Card.

Only a few games goon out over not having the 1.0 card. (Altered Beast)
