Zach #1 Posted January 29, 2003 Have you ever wanted to play Combat but did not have an opponent? When I was seven it was entertaining enough to play solo and shoot at an immobile tank, but I'm a little more picky now. Are there any Atari games that have similar gameplay to a hypothetical sinlge player Combat (i.e. human v.s. computer)? The closest I've thought of is Archon for the 8-bit. Bivotar #2 Posted January 29, 2003 Quite a long time ago, years literally, I recall hearing about an attempt to make a 2600 emulator that supported internet play. Being able to play a game of Combat, Warlords, or some other multi-player game with a far-away friend would be awesome. But I don't think it ever went anywhere. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!
Smada Bez #3 Posted January 29, 2003 The new combat II advance homebrew for the 5200 has 1 player mode.
Paralistalon #4 Posted January 29, 2003 Have you ever wanted to play Combat but did not have an opponent? All the time. Outlaw is kind of like combat. There's a 1-P target shoot mode, but it lacks the thrill of an actual match. Surround, one of my favorite games, has a one player mode, but the computer is way too stupid to make it fun. davidbrit2 #5 Posted January 29, 2003 I think there's a little tank game that's kind of like Battle City. It's been pirated under several names - look for Phantom Tanks, or something like that.
Paul Slocum #6 Posted January 29, 2003 PC Atari Emulator claims to support net play, but every time I've heard of someone trying it, they've said they couldn't get it to work. -Paul

I have tried endlessly to get PCAE to work via the internet... it just doesn't work. Which is very unfortunete that would be cool!

The closest I've thought of is Archon for the 8-bit. Try Konami's Strategy X. You drive a tank around and blow stuff up. It's not a bad game, but you can't shoot diagonally. I believe you're thinking of Tanks but No Tanks, released in Europe as Phantom Panzer.
Rob Mitchell #10 Posted January 30, 2003 I really like Tanks but no Tanks as a single player game .. but again .. no diagonal shooting .. Then there is Battlezone and Robot Tank for some single player tanking. Rob Mitchell, Atlanta, GA

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong! I think that you are referring to Mage...that should be downloadable at zophar.net I think. The main problem is that it uses outdated .dll's and things, so you probably won't be able to get it running (not that it was all that hot to begin with). Yar #15 Posted January 30, 2003 Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Infogrames release a PC game that featured graphical updates of Missle Command, Warlords, and Combat, which also supported online play?
Atariman #16 Posted January 31, 2003 hmm... looked at the back of the box on Combat from Infogrames. Says "single or multiplayer play." I would guess since it's all 3-D, (well, except the "bonus original combat") that it's online. (I can't completely verify that because I haven't opened it yet. ) (I DID have time to open the Dig Dug game, though....)
