Frustration with Jak (and Daxter) II on PS2!

I'm at 59% completion on this game, and am now at the mystic's hut. She throws symbols in the air, and I have to press the corresponding controller button. The goal score is 400. Well, dang it, I have been trying to get past this point for a few days now, and just can't do it! I have only gotten to about 225 score.

 

This is my 2nd time playing through with this game. The first time was a couple of years ago. Both times, I'm stuck in the same place. This means that I'm missing 41% of the game due to this seemingly simple "challenge". But this challenge doesn't even seem to fit in the story as far as I can tell.

 

Grrr ...

 

Anyone have any ideas on how to get past this challenge?
