fdurso224 #1 Posted July 22, 2012 Hi guys, I love playing my games especially to the ones that I grew up with. But sometimes I get a little down in the dumps when I play these games because as the years go by I feel that I'm getting older and the games I played like on the SNES, N64 and Dreamcast (for example) were from my young & teen adolescent years and start to feel that my life is not like I used to be when I was a child or a teenager and some of my family or pets are not around anymore while I was playing them. Sorry, I get a little depress. However I kick out of it though. Anybody else feel this way sometimes? Anthony....

No. And to be honest, if I did feel that way I'd probably go find something else to do. This is supposed to be fun! I do get annoyed sometimes that, after all these years, I'm still quite useless at these games - you'd have thought I'd have gotten better by now. But it's fun trying to get better. I mostly play games when I'm listening to music. The primary thing is the music, and the gaming goes along with it. Maybe you could combine the two as well.... LidLikesIntellivision #5 Posted July 22, 2012 I isn't common but sometimes I remember my father when I'm playing some Atari 2600 games, especially if I'm playing right before the dawn as we did back then. Playing with him is one of the few memories I have. But fortunately, when it happens it isn't always a sad feeling. And I think, at least in my case, many thins that brings me past memories can be changed from sadness into a nostalgic or even a better feeling. I always try to focus on the good moments I had when I was a child or a teen. That's a lesson I learned very young when I was listening olders complaining about their present situation compared to their old times. I put in mind I would try to see the good things of my present condition not forgeting good memories but not living by them or letting them be thorn or a cause of depress.

Spoon #8 Posted July 22, 2012 Usually I feel better when I play the older games. It's a moment in time where I can let go of the reality of being an adult and escape back to my childhood just for a little bit. When I'm done with my game, I usually feel better. Like taking a nap or drinking a coffee.

I feel the same way sometimes when I look at any of the other stuff that I collect, because they are all relics from my childhood. I really love playing my old games (or any of my "old stuff"), but sometimes it makes me very sad for the exact same reasons that you mentioned. It sometimes makes me wonder why I choose to surround myself with painful reminders of the way things used to be. bomberpunk #11 Posted July 22, 2012 i know exactly what you're talking about; that depressed nostalgic i'm-not-that-young-anymore feeling which also may have something to do with all the people i played these games with at the time are no longer part of my life whether they are deceased relatives or friends that you lost contact with. +Gemintronic #12 Posted July 22, 2012 I guess it's human nature to find pain in even the happiest of activities. For me, classic gaming never became classic. Atari 2600 is still as fresh and relevant as it was 30 years ago. New games are still being made. Old games are out there that I still haven't played let alone "beat". All that's changed is that I can now afford to buy the gadgets and games that I want. It's better than my childhood. I NEVER imagined I'd own an NES, SNES and a Genesis. Now I've got all three in the same console!
roland p #13 Posted July 22, 2012 (edited) I never have that. At least not while gaming. What does make me sad, is that I never play with friends or computer club members anymore. That's because the friends have other things to do and the clubs are gone. No 5-player bomberman, comlynx parties, co-up double dragon, figuring out how to beat zelda, shenmue etc. I like the social aspect of gaming. +bennybingo #15 Posted July 22, 2012 In truth, I used to get depressed sometimes about the fact that eventually I would collect all the games made for the 2600 / 7800, and that would be the end of it.... Then, I found AtariAge. Now I am depressed all the time when I look at my bank balance and see what I am spending on home-brews!
sqoon #16 Posted July 22, 2012 I feel a little bummed that I have to play all my games alone and I don't have anyone to play the two player games with. This. Because Intellivision sports games require two players, and even some 2600 games like slot racers and combat, I long for someone to enjoy the classics with. Even systems like Genesis had some excellent 4 player games that cannot be enjoyed in that manner anymore. Someone needs to come up with online-enabled versions of these old games so that they can be enjoyed again.
+save2600 #17 Posted July 22, 2012 Remember... the 'Super', 'Pro' and later versions of sports games on the Intellivision all feature computer A.I. play.
lushgirl_80 #18 Posted July 22, 2012 Interesting thread lol. I never ever felt depressed while playing a game, but I have gotten bored and frustrated with a game . I only get depressed when I listen to certain music or watch a certain old movie or tv show. Videogames always make me happy. I feel really nostalgic when I play old games but never depressed. No time to feel depressed while gaming especially when playing 2600 Space Invaders...the only thing I think about mostly is trying not to get my ship blown up by the aliens! :) :)

I remember as a little boy(back in 2000) when my friends would come over and we would play Goldeneye 007 and Smash Bros on N64 for hours. Now it's only me by myself. akator #21 Posted July 22, 2012 (edited) Years ago I used to feel nostalgic, often in the sad way, when playing old games. Now I'm just happy that I still have them to play instead of being limited to the offerings on current systems. I appreciate what I still have, and the awesome games I can still play, instead of what has been lost by the passage of time. Schizophretard #22 Posted July 23, 2012 I think I just get depressed that I can't enjoy anything like I could as a kid. There was a "high" of being a child that I can't get anymore. I can enjoy retro video games and do but I can't enjoy them as a child. We use to have a wooden console TV and a Vader 2600. My dad didn't like sitting on our couch. He preferred to sit on the floor and lean against the couch while playing Atari. I would lean against the couch and play with him. When mom wasn't looking, he would let me sip his beer. It was fun. I could do that today. I could find another one of those TVs and lean against a couch while playing but it wouldn't be fun in the same way it was then. I'm not that innocent boy anymore. Everything felt new back then but now I'm a man with 30 years of experiences and every year is shorter than the last. The depression I feel is definitely nostalgia. I have a longing for the past and want to be that boy again but ,like a drug addict, the best I can do is chase after that original high. Maybe this is why people procreate? Maybe I could become the dad sneaking sips of beer to my son? Maybe there is a greater joy at being the dad? But if that is the case, what if I had a girl and she wanted XBOX? I would have to try again. Maybe this is why people procreate more than they should?
