flash cart w/ 2600, 7800 and other adapters?

Recommended Posts

What if you had a flash cart thing with like a 26pin (com port) and then you stuck an adapter to that 26pin thing, that looked like a 2600 cart to play in the 2600 and then you could have a NES cart adapter, Atari 8-bit computer cart adapter and so-on.

So the flash card would be a place to store the rom image and you plugged the system adapter into it and the system and away you go?

I don’t know, just a thought.

Hmm, you mean something like Cupcakus' upcomming Flash Cart?

Yes, but maybe he, or someone else, could make one for other systems too?

I would love to see something with different adapters for other systems.

And maybe the 2600 adapter could have dip switchs for the high address lines (like the multi-cart) and you could store more than one game on the flash cart and switch between games with the dip switchs.

Thanks for the plug :-)

The requirements for each computer are drastically different...

However I may create a new cartridge, for each computer down the line... only time will tell :-)

Let's let poor Cupcakus finish the 2600 project first before we start him on a flashcart for the TRS-80 color computer :P . I can't wait to see the final project. Cupcackus -- just try to make it simple enough for us non-techies to use. Good luck!

Thanks to Cupcakes for this explanation but now I have more questions.

I guess I think a cart is a cart is a cart and all they all have some memory that the computer system will access. So I guess what you are saying is this is not correct thinking. Did these early computer systems (game systems and computers systems) use different ways to access memory or something and there for not really compatible?

And thank you for creating this flash cart; I wish you lots of success!

...a flashcart for the TRS-80 color computer...

NO... The Atari 8-bit must come first!!!!!!! :D

Well I am not entirely certain on the specifics for the other computers, but I know the 7800 for instance supports a clock line on the cartridge, allowing easily for extra RAM support.

For these reasons I don't think a "super" cart would work.
