Hmm... looks like Tempest 3K to me. Do we really need an update to T2K for the Jag? I guess if you really want to play the game, download it for free on your PC or expect to wait years and years to finally pay $80 for it on cart *if* somebody were to even bother translating it to the Jaguar.

I dont know. I was just curious since it was T2K inspired. This guy obviously loves T2K on the Jag and if hes an accomplished programmer and it has improvements it was just a curious thought. With the Raptor engine and stuff available now along with programmers claiming the Jag is rather easy to program for these days it was just a thought.

the polygon count along with the textures and anti-aliasing

there just noway the jag could do it if someone can i'll buy a copy lol!

sigh. I'm not talking about matching the graphics of course. Though T2K doesn't get all it can out of the Jag, I was just thinking whatever gameplay elements may have been added/improved could of been ported over.

Projects like Raptor, and all of the other libraries that have come and gone over the years have all been designed to make creating simple games easier.

Tempest 2000, is one of the more technically demanding games on the Jaguar, and there's no way it could be re-written (let alone improved upon) using an easy kit like Raptor.

Whoever did this is an accomplished programmer and probably wouldn't need something like the Raptor engine in any case.

I was just thinking aloud. Forget I mentioned anything.

It's not a matter of being accomplished or otherwise.

A suite of routines such as Raptor/RMotion is suitable for rapid prototyping & game design and is based around the ideas of code flexibility, reusability, simplicity and above all speed of creation. R/RM is based around the tracking and management of 2D objects with an array of other routines to make life easier for people who don't want to be bogged down with technicalities but want to crack on and have fun (e.g. it features simple memory track calls, high score table creation and sorting, image conversion, features such as simple particles and sprites/animations with a host of inherent properties, behaviours, characteristics etc. that can be 'let loose and forgotten about'). Therefore, R/RM is for use by anyone who would benefit from being able to put 2D games together in a simple, tidy, speedy way, whether they are accomplished or less so, a compromise being that the software produced will not necessarily have been created in the most efficient or system-exploiting way. Anything specific to the software being created that would not be best achieved using R/RM would be done outside of it in the best way the programmer saw fit.

To grind and wring the very last drop of power from the Jaguar you don't want general purpose simplicity - you'd want to write very specialised and targeted code that does precisely what you want to do and not a dot more without wasting a single cycle, using every trick and abusing every feature of the architecture that you can. That's not something a general purpose suite of routines is going to help you with, but is effectively the kind of thing Minter was pretty damn good at with his democoderesque approach to visuals and effects.

If you want to make something that out-Minters Minter, you'll probably need to eat, sleep and live Jaguar for a number of years and throw yourself into something head-first for several more. Even then there's no guarantee what you'll come up with would be anything more than just a pale imitation and the waste of half your adult lifetime ;-)

Typhoon 2001 is a game intended as a free alternative to Tempest 2000 for people that do not have a Jaguar. It tries to replicate the play mechanics and feel of the game right down to how the power-up system works. Asides from some new webs, I don't think it adds anything outside of the new visuals and a few new sound effects. Basically, there is nothing that the Jag would benefit from that it doesn't already have.

Just tried this game out and how do you save the level editing? Pressing Enter increases the nodes and pressing Esc unsaves your level editing. The original site for the full documentation is no longer up and while I was able to remap the controls on the menu screen, changing the controls from normal to reversed does nothing. It seems to save if I press the editing keys outside of the edit screen but I still start the level with the same controls regardless of whether I had set it to normal or reversed.

Edit: Also after I finished my configuration of controls I could no longer go to the options screen anymore

i love ideas and opinions was just shooting mine out there its all good now go download and play the game and for all you stargate defender fans i found a direct link to the 14.mb download off you tube here

This game looks REALLY cool. I'm a huge fan of Defender 2000 (one of my favorites on the Jag) as well as Protector and Protector SE.

The link didn't work though. :(

In the YouTube video I mean. Anyone actually able to download it?
