Tyrant #1 Posted July 31, 2012 I am very pleased to announce that a small number of One Button controllers are now available and ready for sale, with more becoming available soon. As interest in these is likely to be quite high, all orders are being taken via a waiting list system. Please feel free to visit the product page and register your interest. You will be notified by email when you reach the top of the list. These controllers are being made during my free time, and as such there is no guarantee how many will be produced, or on the time-scale of their availability. I will endeavour to produce them for as long as there is demand, but cannot guarantee to do so. Your patience is very much appreciated.
ggn #2 Posted July 31, 2012 Seriously, those are GREAT! Plus, it'll give us a reason to do more 1-button games
+Gemintronic #3 Posted July 31, 2012 Seems pretty expensive. You'd need two of these to play the original Street Fighter
Tyrant #4 Posted July 31, 2012 (edited) Seems pretty expensive. I did my best to keep the costs down, but it's not a simple thing to put together, remember this is made entirely from new components, not hacked up controllers, and I'm not making them on a big enough scale to really be able to drive my costs down by much. If I were making tens of thousands of them, they'd be dirt cheap... but somehow I don't think I can sell quite that many of them. Sorry, was making a joke about the original pressure pads for Street Fighter. Actually, I could see using this with the Jaguar -> 2600 cable for one button 2600 game development. http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/review.htm
sh3-rg #6 Posted July 31, 2012 I think the cost is good value when you consider it's all new design and materials, certainly when compared to modified jag pads that were selling for the same price on eBay.co.uk not so long ago. Well done Tyrant, glad to see you got there with these.
Tyrant #7 Posted July 31, 2012 Sorry, was making a joke about the original pressure pads for Street Fighter. Actually, I could see using this with the Jaguar -> 2600 cable for one button 2600 game development. http://www.best-elec....com/review.htm It's cool, no offence taken. As for 2600 dev, it could work. Those controllers behave just like regular Jaguar controllers, except they only have buttons for up, down, left, right, B (big button) and C (small cancel button). Alternatively, if there is any demand for a 2600 version I could probably make some native ones... it's not like the 2600 has an especially complex circuit. I think the cost is good value when you consider it's all new design and materials, certainly when compared to modified jag pads that were selling for the same price on eBay.co.uk not so long ago. Well done Tyrant, glad to see you got there with these. Thanks man.

Rex Dart #9 Posted July 31, 2012 Surely, this is not the same number "one" I've been accustomed to all my life.
+CyranoJ #10 Posted July 31, 2012 Surely, this is not the same number "one" I've been accustomed to all my life. That is because our 'one button game' needs 6 buttons These controllers are fantastic for playing SFDX with, and yes - we need to make more one button games!
Tyrant #11 Posted August 1, 2012 That is because our 'one button game' needs 6 buttons These controllers are fantastic for playing SFDX with, and yes - we need to make more one button games! Yes indeed. The original design was much simpler, just up/down (on a rocker switch), the big button and a small button for C... but then I realised that the code-entry screen requires left and right as well.
Rex Dart #12 Posted August 1, 2012 Too late to re-do the menu design, eh?
Tyrant #13 Posted August 1, 2012 Too late to re-do the menu design, eh? By that point Reboot had sold a hundred copies on CD, and who knows how many downloads, so it was a lot easier to just add some extra buttons to the controller.
sh3-rg #14 Posted August 1, 2012 It's not a big deal - you play the game with 1 button and it's got ONE HUUUUUGE BUTTON
Tyrant #15 Posted August 1, 2012 you play the game with 1 button But you play the menu with six... but then unless you're going to use some kind of weird timing-puzzle, a menu realistically needs at least 4 buttons.
Rex Dart #16 Posted August 1, 2012 Move between options with Up/Down rocker, cycle options with One Button, choose Accept at bottom with One Button? But yeah, a code-entry screen would take more creativity than that.
sh3-rg #17 Posted August 1, 2012 a menu realistically needs at least 4 buttons. Is that a challenge? :-)
Tyrant #18 Posted August 1, 2012 a menu realistically needs at least 4 buttons. Is that a challenge? :-) Not really... you've already got 6 buttons on those controllers, and the minimum really is one button, but that's awkward.

I swear I'm not trying to dump on your product, really it looks great, but... morse code gets along well with a single input. Hold & tap. You could hold the button to flip down a list, and tap to cycle through the options on each item. Password input could be morse style. But that's sort of complicating things by over-simplifying. A two-way rocker & single button would be fine. And now I will stop junking up your thread. Sorry.

sh3-rg #22 Posted August 2, 2012 morse code gets along well with a single input. Stephen Hawking gets along fine with a single switch operated by a cheeky wink. As for Tyrant's pad - it was made to work with the game. 1 button to play, several more to navigate the menus. At least it leaves more possibilities for supporting the pad in future

If I had been, I would have suggested that they require a few less buttons, but what's done is done and they work just fine with all the buttons like they are.
evilevoix #24 Posted August 3, 2012 Is this for real? What is the purpose? http://www.superflydx.com/ I must have one.
Tyrant #25 Posted August 3, 2012 I must have one. Put yourself on the waiting list then. It might take me some time to get through the list (it's already got more people on it than I have stock, for a number of different components), but I'll be ordering more components early next week (in between juggling job interviews and olympic tickets), and I'll do my best to keep making these as long as people keep wanting to buy them. It might take a long time, but if people can be patient with me I'll try to get everyone the controllers they want.
