My 7800 collection !

Recommended Posts

I started collecting Atari 7800 stuff some months ago. I think now my collection is pretty decent.

Why do I collect for the 7800 ? Nostalgia !

Back in the early 1990's, the Atari 7800 was my first console. Well actually it belonged to my elder brother, but I played on it. I remember my brother asking my parents for a console at Christmas 1991. I think he wanted the Nes with Super Mario Bros, but he ended up with the Atari 7800 and Mario Bros (my parents didn't know anything about video game consoles and couldn't make the difference between the two, and as the Atari 7800 was cheaper, they bought it instead of the Nes). Then we got also other games to play on our Atari. I can clearly remember the games we had :

- Pole Position II : it was the only game my father (who isn't interested in video gaming at all) played, along with Asteroids (built in the console).

- Donkey Kong Junior.

- Ikari Wariors.

- Planet Smashers.

- F 14 Tomcat.

- some sport game (I think it was maybe California Games or Summer Games).

and also Double Dragon and Commando that I bought myself. I remember that often the games for the Atari weren't exposed in the stores and that I had to ask to the clerk to show me the few Atari 7800 games they had in stock. I remember too that I couldn't decide between Commando and F 18 Hornet. Finally I chose Commando.

A few years after, my brother sold his Atari to our neighbour and it was the end of our story with the Atari 7800. Then we had a Master System, then a Megadrive, a Nintendo 64, etc.

Now I am still a video game player on the PS3, the Wii... and again on the Atari 7800 !

So here is my collection. All is PAL and all was purchased on the internet in the last months. I made some good deals on ebay (for examples I get 15 Atari 7800 games, almost all new and still shrink wrapped, for 100 euros) :

My 7800 games. I have 25 boxed games (most with their manual), plus some I have in double (like Mission Impossible, Matmania Challenge, Midnight Mutants and Xevious). Some are still shrink-wrapped, not because I want to build an "all brand new" collection, but either because I still didn't have the time to try them, or just because I have them in double. I also have some carts in loose (such as Mario Bros, Hat Trick, two Kareteka, two Choplifter, etc.) :

My 2600 games :

My systems. I didn't manage to get the older (the wooden one) Atari 2600 working : I just can't find the right channel on my new TV. The other one (the Darth Vader) is working, but I play all my games on the Atari 7800 (I have actually three Atari 7800, one of them doesn't work properly). It's much more simple.

Next addition to my collection will be "Water Ski". I got it on ebay (unboxed but with its manual) for 25 euros. It seemed to be a good deal.

That's a nice 7800 collection there. While I had a rather large 2600 collection, I spent the majority of my game time playing the 7800 games like Galaga, Robotron:2084, and Xevious. What would you say is your favorite 7800 title out of the bunch?

My favorite to play are probably Double Dragon, Ikari Warriors, Asteroids and Mario Bros.

Food Fight is fun too.

But I must say some titles on the 7800 are incredibly mediocre, from Kareteka to Hat Trick.
