Austin #51 Posted August 12, 2012 Of course, I have since bought a lot of individual games for some of these systems, which is kind of weird.. Messes up my theory a bit. But I really like the complete packages on some of the games... A couple of years ago I bought the first Genesis EverDrive flash cart. The biggest reason was to keep myself from needing to buy Genesis carts. What have I done? Continued to by Genesis games, despite being able to play them all fine on my flash cart. Ugh. It's like the collecting habit itself is inescapable.
Schizophretard #52 Posted August 12, 2012 Most bang for the buck? (no mention of ethics): Baseball bat: $20 flashlight: $3 hired help: $50, or assorted drugs Find a well stocked classic games store (or friends home far away from me) with an accessible back window. Borrow your brother-in-laws pickup truck. Break and enter and (quickly) grab desired systems and games. Skidaddle. Use the leftover money to buy the extra cables and stuff you forgot so everything works. Baseball bat: $20 flashlight: $3 hired help: $50, or assorted drugs And crawling through the window to find the Angry Video Game Nerd armed with a Klingon bat'leth: Priceless There are some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's MasterCard.
HatefulGravey #53 Posted August 12, 2012 Yeah, if you were going to go the criminal road to collecting AVGN would be the person to rob. Maybe Ax, I've seen the pictures I know its there. In either case you might want to add a moving truck rental to the list of things you need that Mastercard for.

HatefulGravey #55 Posted August 12, 2012 I forget you also have the arcade stuff and display stands for the conosles and such. Those take up mush more room. Maybe I would let you keep those and just clean those shelves off real good for you .
ilovethevectrex #56 Posted August 25, 2012 i would spend it ALL on vectrex stuff. i still dont own every game, and i dont own the light pen or 3d imager!

Turbogfx #59 Posted August 26, 2012 To anyone who's on a budget and wants to start their first retro gaming collection on authentic hardware and software, I would immediately advize them to go get an Atari 2600 Jr., get a pair of decent controllers and a box full of classic games like Missile Command, Robot Tank, Ms. Pacman, Frogger, Joust, Yar's Revenge, Berzerk, etc. The Atari 2600 was my gateway to retro gaming as a standalone hobby. toptenmaterial #61 Posted August 31, 2012 I will be receiving my student reimbursement check soon (hopefully). In the $200 range, I'm thinking a new DS Lite off Amazon and a multicard, or a Gamecube with Game Boy Player and a ton of carts (Castlevania Double Pack, all Super Mario Advance, Advance Wars 1 & 2, Mario Vs. DK, Classic NES Series...)
BydoEmpire #62 Posted August 31, 2012 I'd probably also go with a Genesis and pile of loose carts. High bang for the buck.
ilovethevectrex #63 Posted September 1, 2012 i would spend it ALL on vectrex stuff. i still dont own every game, and i dont own the light pen or 3d imager! i actually might spend half of it on vectrex games (boxed) or a 2nd vectrex controller, and the other half i would use to buy a ton of atari 2600 games. ive recently been collecting a TON of vectrex stuff
ilovethevectrex #64 Posted September 1, 2012 I'd probably also go with a Genesis and pile of loose carts. High bang for the buck. this is a random question, but i really want to know, how do you make a signature on this website? you know how under your post it says "If you can't do it with 8 bits, you don't need to do it." how did you do that? PM sent on that for you. Got to love a kid into classic gaming. Profile says 13 years old and owns a Vectrex. What a start! On that note, and more to the point of the thread, can one get a vectrex and enough games to enjoy it for $200? I haven't looking into one mostly due to the room it would take to keep it around right now, but also because I thought the costs would be Neo Geo stupid. I must look into this more it would seem. ilovethevectrex #66 Posted September 1, 2012 i got a really good deal (75 bucks, 5 boxed games, minestorm overlay, and the console manual) but they usually cost over 200 bucks :/ ya, i own 15 game consoles, no one else in my class into retro video games, i dont really like the new ones so i just collect old ones

Catsmasher #68 Posted September 8, 2012 If I was starting out - I would buy an Atari 7800 (can play both 2600 and 7800 games), a bunch of games, a couple of six packs of beer and a big bag of Cheetos.

Thats a really good place to start. The controller for the 7800 is crap but if you know the right people you can get a sweet modded NES pad for not very much and that would go a long long way. +Gemintronic #70 Posted September 8, 2012 Someone should make a glorified homebrew frontend/repository. Something with an easy interface for newbies to download all sorts of good emulators and homebrew ROMs. If I was starting out I'd rather spend $0 and emulate + freeware.
HatefulGravey #71 Posted September 8, 2012 Emulation websites are always a little janky and it seems to me they always have been. Paying for the bandwidth for other people to download these things of questionable (at best) legallity is something not many really want to get involved in. Thus all the ads and crazyness you see on ROM sites.
Reaperman #72 Posted September 8, 2012 (edited) Thus all the ads and crazyness you see on ROM sites. To get away from that, there's always the many, many roms hosted on this site I don't mind roms themselves, but software emulation really bugs me. retrorussell #73 Posted September 8, 2012 I'm getting $200 this weekend from my brother for rent money. But if it were to just fall into my lap I'd put it towards a new ceiling fan motor.

This site is a great place for Atari roms you are correct there. What if I wanted SNES roms? Then I find myself digging through piles and piles of ads to find the hidden "download now" link.
