NE146 #2 Posted August 9, 2012 Mattel Baseball was always fun to me for the simple fact that the pitch really was fast like a real pitch.. as opposed to something like Entex Baseball where the it was a slow series of beeps.
Dryfter #3 Posted August 9, 2012 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mattel_Auto_Race That was really the only one I played but it was awesome. I may try to pick one up now that you've reminded me of it.

CRTGAMER #7 Posted August 9, 2012 (edited) I own quite a few including Football, Basketball, Baseball and one that I still have since purchased brand new in 1978; Battlestar Galactica. I'm a little nuts on portable gaming, posted a Guide. jaybird3rd #8 Posted August 9, 2012 My only Mattel handheld is BurgerTime, which I had as a kid and bought again a few years ago. It actually plays a pretty good (albeit scaled-down) version of BurgerTime; I almost wish Mattel had taken their 2600 port in a similar direction instead of trying to replicate the full version. I've been interested in getting more handheld games, particularly the ones from Mattel and Entex. Besides the BurgerTime, I currently have an Entex Turtles and an Atari Touch Me. Keatah #9 Posted August 9, 2012 I have autorace. It's interesting to note that autorace has more complex and larger software than 2k vcs games.
AtariLeaf #10 Posted August 10, 2012 I'm starting to get a desire to collect some of these myself. Being a big fan of the Tandy Color Computer, I'm kinda leaning toward the Tandy/Radio Shack handhelds.
simbalion #11 Posted August 10, 2012 I started out collecting handheld games and have a few of the Mattel models. Then it went to the consoles and finally arcade games.

For the record, that's actually by Bandai and not Mattel. Mattel just licensed it. They even made a VFD version with 3 burgers. And I agree it was a very nice version. Bandai made a lot of really nice little handheld ports of arcade games,
pimpmaul69 #13 Posted August 11, 2012 Im poor so i cant afford the old mattel hanhelds. I purchased led football, football II, basketball and soccer on my iphone
sqoon #14 Posted August 11, 2012 I see them at GW and SA stores for $2-$5 all the time. Not too expensive.
IntellivisionDude #15 Posted August 11, 2012 (edited) I got lucky on Ebay on the Auto Race, can't remember how much exactly but it was around the $10 mark. I think since it was missing the battery cover nobody else bid on it. The Basketball and Football i found at an Antique store for $8 or 10 each i think. pimpmaul69 #16 Posted August 11, 2012 (edited) I also have the 2 ds club nintendo game & watch collection games and the 9 game & watch games downloaded on my 3ds. Those are well done replicating the originals imo. Edited August 11, 2012 by pimpmaul69

bomberpunk #21 Posted August 14, 2012 The intellivision branded ones were cheap LCD games but one was a 2player VS system (similar to the ones Nintendo made) which had impressive features for what it was. Tiger made a handheld with 5 Atari titles in it. That one is awesome.
BassGuitari #22 Posted August 14, 2012 My wife is really into collecting handhelds. We've accumulated maybe 50 or 60 of the things over the years. I'll have to take an inventory one of these days. For the Mattel ones, offhand I know we have Football, Football 2, Baseball, Soccer, Auto Race (doesn't work, boo), and Basketball 2. We've also got a bunch of the old Tiger ones, some Colecos, a Sears Basketball, some Entexes (they made really nice games), a few Tandy/Radio Shacks and Bandais and Tomys, Simon and Pocket Simon and various Simon knockoffs from any number of the previously mentioned companies, an Atari Touch Me (the original Simon!), and some other stuff I can't even think of. We've also got a Conix Basketball that I've heard might be rare but I have no idea. Weirdly, for the most part, we never really specifically looked for any of ours. We just kind of chanced upon them at Goodwills and flea markets and whathaveyous over the last decade, so we got most of them really cheap. I was kind of indifferent to them at the time -I was looking for "real" games, ha- but the wife (then girlfriend) really liked them, so there you go. I really had no idea until recently how expensive these can get (do people actually pay $40 plus for a Mattel handheld?). Guess she was on to something! I would like to collect more of the arcade-style ones. Stuff like the Zaxxon, Tron, and Defender games look really cool, but the way prices are trending, I can do without. I'm sure they're worth it to some people, just not to me.
bomberpunk #23 Posted August 14, 2012 $40+ is nothing. i've seen some insane prices well into triple digits (and quadruple for really obscure stuff). check out Handheld Museum, or rather, send your wife there. you guys will be broke in no time when she discovers what's out there! IntellivisionDude #24 Posted August 14, 2012 I remember having an auto race clone by some other company... damn! Now you all made me wish to start collecting this stuff too! There a few clones cataloged on the handheld museum site. I went through the site inside out trying to figure out which version i had as a kid, and never did fully figure it out. Here is one of them. http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Misc/TommyAR.htm

Cool stuff! I know I found a couple that I want already. I'll wait until I find some deals though. Yeah, that could be a long wait, but I'm a patient man, and I've got plenty of other games to occupy my attention. I'm not paying any $50+ for a machine, however cool it might be, that plays one dinky LCD game with about $3 of play value. (And yet I'd pay that for an RCA Studio II. Hypocritical? Absolutely. ) I'd always considered LCD/LED handheld collecting a sort of classic game collecting subculture, but I'm recognizing that it's really a hobby unto itself.
