Mattel Electronics Handhelds

Recommended Posts

I'd always considered LCD/LED handheld collecting a sort of classic game collecting subculture, but I'm recognizing that it's really a hobby unto itself.

You can't leave out VFD's.. the all time best ones. :)

I have some of the rereleases they did (which added a much needed sound switch), and they're a blast. There was also some iPhone remakes that were pretty good and very accurate to the original.

I've always a fascination with these early 80's VFD/LCD/LED handhelds, but never got around to buying much of them.

Yeah, I lump them all together. The VFDs are the ones I'm really interested in.

I was looking at that one, you beat me to the punch

Ah! Sorry! I kind of sniped it but thought there wasn't much interest on that item since there was only another guy bidding and he didn't bid much anyway... that wasn't you right?

What about this lot instead? eBay Auction -- Item Number: 1809524850891?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=180952485089&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER] It looks interesting (and I promise won't snipe on it! ;) )

I placed on the wish list list instead of the watch list and forgot about it. so I never got a chance to bid.

After viewing this topic I have finally identified the 'John Doe' handheld I used to have. Seeing that Auto Race definitely tipped me off but something wasn't right. After checking that link provided, there is closure. I knew it was something like Auto Race but the theme wasn't right. Well after seeing a pic of that Ski Slalom - that's it!

What's interesting I remember my folks picked this up at one of those county fairgrounds' flea markets in the mid '80s. According to that article, it wasn't released in the states or rare here? Nevertheless, I wound up getting it... Talk about loads of fun! I have to find me one again - preferably boxed....

To the handheld gurus - how rare is this thing?

I'd like to get Ski Slalom. I hear it's just Auto Race reversed.

Mattel Electronics Handheld games, the ones that started it all for Mattel in 1976. That led up to the awesome Intellivision system. How many of you Intv collectors still have and play the old Mattel handhelds. i still have my Football 1 and 2 , from back in the day and still works. I also have Basketball 1 and 2 , Armor battle, Hockey and 2 World championship Football in boxes. About you., What do you have. Do you have .favorite one . Mine is Football 2.

This list got me thinking about the Space Alert handheld. I haven't thought about it in years, but I remember my uncle getting it new in our pre- Atari days. I would play, then slide it across Grandma's kitchen table, so he could see the score to beat. And then he would do the same. This went on for hours. I can almost still hear the sound of that game sliding across that table.

Wow, the nostalgia is palpable. :ponder:
