Light sixer tight fit?

Recommended Posts

I just swapped out my beat up vader for a light sixer and noticed red label Dkjr and congo bongo just don't fit, and both worked perfectly in the vader. What's different here?

If they won't go all the way in, check to be sure the 2 tabs on the cart slot and on the cart's dust flap are present. If both tab on either the slot or the cart is broken, it will not open the dust flap and you can't plug the cart in at all.

Also there's been design variations over time so one version may be a bit loose while other is very tight.

yea, some red label carts (later production dates) wont fit well in the woodys. Its just how some of them are. Most will fit ok still, but some are slightly too large. I guess tolerances werent as critical with the junior, and maybe by then quality control was worse too

My light sixer is the same, with some silver label carts even. Most will go in, but it isn't much fun to force them, of course.

I just noticed this same issue with my light sixer.

I just received a reconditioned heavy sixer with the composite video outs from Best and all carts fit fine.

I can't even get Solaris half way in on the light sixer.

If one or both tabs are broken you can't play games. Well except for activation games that have no dust cover. And even those with a dust cover can still be played. But much harder. Take a screw driver in the tabs and push the cover up. And then insert it in the slot at a angle before the cover pops back in place.

On the six switch models, carts must go through an opening in the bezel and another in the top cover of the RF shield. If the bezel isn't attached right or the RF shield isn't attached correctly to the bottom case, this will cause fit issues. Even if all that's done right, though, you might still have carts that fit tight.

I've never seen a unit with broken tabs in the console--not even a woody or a vader. Those have a very shallow port compared to the deep port on the sixers and the 7800. I suppose it's possible. Repairing the port is also possible but it's very difficult to do.

I had the same problem with my Sears light sixer. I bought a brand new version of Galaxian off the web and it would not go into the Sears at all. Well, not at all. A good push got it to finally go in, but it was an argument getting it out then. But once I got the "new" Darth Vader, it slid right in. It's almost like the older sets have smaller cart slots than the later ones. I don't get it...I assume that was all universal, but yet there are some carts that won't find in the older models.

I believe it's just the way it is. My light sixer has issues with all red label games (Solaris, Midnight Magic)...it even had issue with the Harmony cart! The Jr. never had any of these problems in comparison. I've made the red label games fit, but you gotta be gentle: and if you're into keeping games pristine, I'd advise against using them in a light sixer as the edges will show wear after a while.

It's not really the labels that are a problem but the cart type. There are three types of carts used. The first have the locking dust covers. The second are like the first but the dust covers don't lock. The third have no dust covers. They also have holes in the corners where you can accidentally put holes in the labels. They are ProSystem carts with VCS labels and games inside. The reason people are saying red labels is because red label variations were the last variations used and the third cart type were the last type used. So, it is common to find them together but not always. Not all of the third type have red labels and not all red labels have the third type. So, it is best not to use the labels as your guide but the cart type. If you can see inside and it has the two holes then there can be issues making them fit in older models because they were designed to fit in Juniors and ProSystems.
