Silica gel packs w/ Games in plastic bins..Will it over dry?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, soo I don't know. I ended up getting a ton of them from my job, and decided to throw them into the tubs with the stored collection.

Threw quite a few in each..Would'nt think it would harm them, but I would'nt want to overdry and make labels crinkle or whatnot.

Any experiences??

Edit: Also threw some in with some consoles and controllers and other asessories.

Those silica gel thiings pull moisture out of the air, I suppose if you had a label or a cart laying directly onto the silica, it could potentially pull moisture out of the plastic (causing similar damage that you'd get from leaving it out to bleach in the sun, bleaching or becoming brittle) or dry the glue off the labels which could cause the glue to fail.

I don't really see that happening though, I don't have a lot, but I have silica gel in with lots of bins with old cart games, CD's and even various systems and memory cards and have never had any issues with any of them.

If your concerned, you could try putting the silica into a small cardboard box or something to keep it separate of your games, but honestly, I don't think it'd be a problem either way.

Hmm, I wouldn't worry, but really have no scientific reason to say so.

Just out of curiosity, how many collectors use them? I have a dehumidifier set up about ten feet from my collection. Should I also buy some silica packs?
