16bb
Hi everyone, I have an Atari 1050 drive which has a problem; Once turned on, it will boot and load floppies but after a couple of minutes the drive mechanics stop working and the Atari only gives boot errors. Does anyone have an idea what I could do to repair this ? The heatsink in the back gets very hot too.
+bob1200xl
Can you measure the voltages in the power supply? The large filter capacitors tend to go bad, which can overheat the rectifiers and regulators. After a few minutes, it dies... Bob
31336haxx0r
Very likely those capacitors are dead, drawing too much current for the regulators to handle. Once the regs reach a certain temperature (IIRC 125 °C) they protect themselves from overtemp by switching off.
16bb
Thanks for all the answers! So far, the power supply seems to be alright, it gives out 9 volt and doesn't wobble Those capacitors are the 3 big ones in the back of the unit ? I'll try radioshack for replacement parts, Thanks again!
31336haxx0r
Those 3 fat brown dudes at the top if the image are the capacitors. Note the little green ones below them. Watch out for leaks. If they fail, they sometimes leak their innards, which is caustic and can destroy parts or even the PCB. Also sniff 'em. If they smell like fish and burned bubble gum, they've had it. 16bb
I replaced the three capacitors, they were indeed bad. After I replaced them, it didn't get heated up that much but the 5.25" drive itself does not seem to get any power (no seek on startup). On the PCB, you can see burns near the resistors of the heatsink (TIP110) I think Bob was right and I should invest a few euro's in a new-old drive, Thanks again,
+bf2k+
Did you pay attention to polarity when you replaced the caps?
16bb
Yes, I fitted the capacitors just like the old ones.
noshbags
Did you ever get this drive to work in the end? I a having the same problem with my 1050. If you did what was the solution?
