Bagged my first CV in the wild

Recommended Posts

Today at Goodwill. I am amazed because these never turn up in the wild, much less with expansion module #2, Turbo, and Donkey Kong games. A little dirty, and the expansion port door seems stuck open, but it will clean up fine I am sure.

Great find! The Expansion Bus door issue is a common one and you should be able to work it free without opening the system.

Yeah, I found my last on in the wild. When my GW guy called me and told me he had one I was like "WHAT?!?, are you sure it's a CV?"

So does it work sqoon?

I took the console apart and cleaned everything thoroughly. Used a toothbrush with alcohol into the cartridge slot, followed by electronic contact cleaner. Also, sprayed contact cleaner into the power switch and flipped it back and forth. Put it all back together, cleaned the cartridge pins with alcohol and contact cleaner, and the images are as follows:

Notice the artifacts in the video? They are in the same screen locations on every game I put into it. What can be done to remedy that?

Try a Power Supply that you know to be good if you have one, but clean the power connectors first. If the problem still persists, then remove the power switch from the PCB, properly clean with Alcohol and De-Oxit, repack with De-electric Grease and solder the power switch back into place. If the problem still persists (which it shouldn't), there could be an issue with one of the RAM chips.

I am a firm believer in removing and refurbishing the switch. I don't believe in spraying contact cleaner on the switch.

I am not into the diagnose over the net, but guessing... if the power switch was rebuilt and 100% and you still get those results, then it is likely the power supply or the VDP is going bad. It does not look like a DRAM issue.

Update:

I sprayed contact cleaner into 4 pin holes in end of power supply cord, then the same into the power port on the back of the console. Resulted in same artifacts in the same spots on my TV screen.

Also, I tried the power supply from my "good" system. Still get same artifacts in the same locations on-screen.

Anyway, it is coming Yurkie's way soon, so hopefully it is reparable.
