bomberpunk #2 Posted October 10, 2012 the latest method to creating homebrews on the atari 2600 is wailing out on a special custom-built electric guitar connected to a flux capacitor, which translates the signals into zeroes and ones (known as "binary"), which is then finally compiled into an EEPROM writer. once the data is written, then BAM you have a brand new homebrew game. oh and you have to dress like a ninja or it doesn't work.
+Random Terrain #3 Posted October 10, 2012 If you search for Atari 2600 what is a homebrew using Google, you'll get links like these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_2600_homebrew http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-create-your-own-homebrew-atari-2600-games/
KevinMos3 #4 Posted October 10, 2012 There are so many good ones, it's hard to narrow the list down to 10. I'll inevitably leave out even some of my favorites. Here's a quickie off the top of my head: Boulder Dash Cave In Halo 2600 K.O Cruiser / AVGN KO Boxing Juno First Lady Bug Panky the Panda Squish 'em Star Castle 2600 Stay Frosty (included in Stella's Stocking, but also available by itself) Again, even some of my favorites aren't in this list. There are also a lot of games either in development or seemingly abandoned that are complete enough that I play them often. To give some perspective, I play homebrew games on my 2600 far more than the older commercial games... probably about 6-to-1. Of course part of that reason is that I'm playing new things all the time (list constantly chaning) vs having the same set of commercial games that I've been playing over the past 25-30 years. For screenshots, you can easily find those on these forums. I'm on dialup and won't do that legwork for you.
BigO #5 Posted October 10, 2012 A standout to me is Strat-O-Gems: http://www.atariage.com/software_page.html?SoftwareLabelID=2736
+Nathan Strum #6 Posted October 10, 2012 The AtariAge store can be sorted by Most Popular, and each game page has screenshots (and some have videos).

PFL #8 Posted October 11, 2012 There are probably more homebrew games these days than actual commercial titles released from back in the glory days. And the VCS homebrew scene has been active a lot longer than the commercial market ever was... Actually, I sometimes wish that the term "homebrew" would take a back to seat to something more legit like, say, Gen 2.0 software or something. I feel it does a little disservice to some of the most professional software produced for the system. I mean, these games are often coded, advertised to the world (forum posts, website articles and podcast mentions) produced on cart and sold in the AA store. It doesn't get much more commercial than that! Anyway, here are some of my favourites ( of Gen 2.0 software... ) Juno First Boulder Dash Space Rocks The Wicked Father Blinky Goes Up Muncher Lady Bug Star Fire EMR There are also a ton of hacks that qualify, to my mind, as pretty much new games or sequels. Some of Thomas Jentzsch's work such as Missile Command TB and Battlezone tank controls. Also, games like Galaxian Arcade and Pac-Man Arcade are good examples too. killersquirel #10 Posted October 29, 2012 I would add that Marble Craze is by far one of the greatest homebrew games of all time. If you don't own this game already, you NEED to get it. It is a paddle game, so a good set of paddles is required. -mike

It's tough to learn since it requires you to use two paddles, but I think that only adds to the game. And the levels ramp up in difficulty nicely. And of course the split screen two player mode is fantastic. Plus you have a great soundtrack and a flashy title screen. ..Al
AtariBrian #12 Posted November 18, 2012 Toyshop Trouble is in my opinion the most addicting homebrew of all .
Animan #13 Posted November 28, 2012 (edited) Everyone pretty much listed most of the good ones already, but here's a few others that are pretty awesome: -Seaweed Assault - Random Terrain's brilliant little shooter. -Trashmania: Remix - Game I made myself. I know, shameless plug, but there's a handful of members here who love it. -Thrust+ - Outstanding port of a C64 classic. Pretty rad music, too. -FlapPing - A unique version of Pong that takes a few elements from Joust. Fun multiplayer game!
