Space Sims making a comeback (Chris Roberts)

Well let's just throw Chris Roberts ego and money pit under the rug here for the moment and think of just the rest of the topic header. I'd say yes. A bit rocky in some cases, and pretty amazingly smooth in others. A quick look over at GoG I can point to three cases of two pretty smooth and one rocky to well late smooth -- Everspace, Rebel Galaxy, and No Man's Sky. You didn't see much stuff like these as of late, if you saw space it was some odd little 8bit/16bit style indie toy of a game, a re-release or remaster of an old thing, or your random turn based oddity or RTS even. Actual dimensional jumping to areas and doing stuff (mining, shooting, getting, whatever) had been fairly barren but those 3 really do fit the mold nicely.

I'd love to care about Star Citizen but I find it grossly insulting how long that project has floundered along and the bastard wants like $75-100 or more to get yourself a very basic gimped starter space ship just to mess around with and having more suitable useful stuff in the 3 digits price tier for a very alpha maybe sorta beta space game. I think not.

Yeah, it seems more like a Ponzi scheme than ever. When are they scheduled to run out of money, call it "finished," and release it?

Let's write out "Elite Dangerous," please. Abbreviating it as "ED" gives me flashbacks of Bob Dole's commercials for Viagra.

My space shooter money pit of choice is Galaxy on Fire 3, where I have yet to spend a single penny.

I downloaded it, paid my fee, and started playing it last year. I was super hyped but that quickly fizzled after i paid more money to get a better ship only to be constantly killed by spawn killer people. After a few months after I stopped playing I read about some sort of negative reputation or something that had you start in some place full of "criminals" which meant everything got worse. People were getting that by accident or by a game bug and weren't be allowed to have that changed.

I just wanted to try and be a legitimate tester and to enjoy the life of a ship captain. I haven't played it since. I need them to earn me back and right now almost a year later I'm really not convinced that this will even really be anything but a money pit. I really want to be wrong here but after my bad Elite Dangerous experience and now a bad Star Citizen experience I doubt I'll ever get a fun space sim in my lifetime. Too bad too because Star Citizen worked great on my XBOX One controller on PC and the game itself was turning out to be pretty neat.

Perhaps they need to get Smiling Bob as their mascot?

smiling_bob_ep.jpg

He was good as pulling his lies for year yet 9 years ago got slapped with a $500M court loss and a 25year jail sentence for doing something similar. Collecting a lot of lies, throwing a lot of loud advertising, perpetual promises, little delivery, people pissing millions on his crap collectively, and little to show for it other than some unproven claims and placebo effect. Much like Star Citizen. You joking about ED that one just popped into my mind as man that fits. :D Perhaps we need to propagate a Smiling Chris meme with his head on that dudes body from those decade old ads.

I remember smiling bob but no idea about that story you mention. Link? Or was that sarcasm? LOL

It was sarcasm due to the Bob Dole ED joke. He tried to sell fake ED pills for years then got busted hard core for it on an epic level never seen before given the financial slap and jail term on top. The joke was the fact that Chris there has been taking peoples money for years, millions upon millions of it. And just like Smiling Bob there who puts on a nice show and a smile, fails to produce much of anything but the placebo effect in the end swindling a crap load of people out of a lot of money for a product that effectively doesn't do what is advertised and has been advertised for years.

Played some Star Citizen a few nights ago to get reacquainted with it in anticipation of alpha 3.0 and it plays pretty good on my new(er) system. I need to remap some things on my XBOX One controller but all-in-all I had a good time for a couple hours. I do need to make sure to get a ship with good weapons because my weapons suck and I cannot win a dogfight to save my life! I'll be looking forward to either being a miner or trader/merchant. Though the explorer looks like fun too.

Do you know if they'll ever hit a point where you can get a good ship that isn't going to cost like a $100 or more? That was a huge turn off to me not jumping in on their funding campaign years ago.

Honestly, I have NO idea. If they have a "beta" phase after this "alpha" phase then I would assume maybe at that point since there will likely be dozens of ships to choose from. I made the mistake of buying the Aurora MR or whatever the starter ship was a was promptly had my ass handed to me by pirates. So I sold it back and bought an Avenger Stalker which a year ago was a pretty good ship. Now its a bit obsolete and I don't have the patience or bankroll to get another ship so I'm concentrating on non-ship combat stuff. I cannot wait to get to play 3.0 and go down to planet/moon surfaces and spend more time outside the ship.

When the game is full launched to retail I wonder if everyone will start off with a basic ship of the job profession choice or the same ship that you then earn money to trade up? I'd hate to have this be pay to win at full retail launch because I'm NOT about spending $100+ for a good ship.

Your problem was my exact concern. Pay to get it, then pay to not suck because you have to keep buying expensive real cash ship upgrades as that's how it is handled now.

The ultimate solution to this is to allow players to earn money at a rate that you can get another ship better than yours without too much trouble. I believe I read somewhere that Roberts doesn't want or like pay to win so we'll see if that comes to be true once the game is fully released to retail.

If the game is already essentially pay to win then I guess Roberts has come to some kind of inner peace on the decision despite his apparently vocal dislike of it? Personally I don't expect it to change if they're already making a lot of cash on this. The only question is what excuse will they give to justify keeping the current model after the final release. My bets are on "we have to be fair to the paid beta testers who sunk thousands of dollars into their ships.".

It isn't pay to win right now because it is still in development. :)

Yeah, there's nothing to even win at the moment, so you can't pay to do it. Also everything there is to do can be done fairly well with the base ships. Granted I haven't played the current patch, and there's little point in my trying it now with 3.0 due out in the next couple months.

It's my understanding (which seems up to date) that ships purchased during development will be available after release in the multiplayer universe, and all ships will be able to be earned in game, or purchased with in-game money. It's also my understanding that in the single-player squadron 42, everybody will be on even footing, and I seem to recall mention of there possibly being some multiplayer bonus carryover from performance in the campaign. Of course at this point, there's been mention of just about every kind of possibility, so who knows how current that is. I think the last I heard of it was before the packages split.

I am looking forward to 3.0, as I do want to get down and fly low over the moons, and explore the various buildings. I still think it looks great, and citizencon is coming up this month, which is the second biggest time of the year for sc news. I'm not at all 'into' playing it, as they burned me out on control revisions, but I'll go in and goof around in 3.0 for a few hours--as is I keep up with the news on youtube, and probably have more fun that way.

Well CitizenCon was today--probably the second biggest day for star citizen news--though this year there is mention of a december sq42 livestream.

I'm still sorting through the streams from earlier today. Don't know when it's coming out (sigh), but once again I'm cutting them slack for being the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Damned if they haven't outdone themselves once again:

Well, I've gone through the videos, and the one above definitely seems to be 'the big one.' Flying through a procedural city-planet, up to one of the new modular building-block space stations, and then flying off to a very different mining planet. All without a perceptible load screen. And that's just a piece of one star system. It seems like their initial claim of '90% NPC, 10% player' is going to be extremely low. More like 0.000001% players. Other good stuff was talked about, though. Here's a good summary of the whole event:

What they have done with this demo, is blow away what I thought possible in gaming by quite a lot.

That said, a game that simply exceeded my expectations, without redefining them, would probably have been out already.

The Arc Corp landing zone that came out years ago was already at an amazing enough level, IMO, but now...just wow.

Now that they've expanded the size of their sandbox, I hope it's going to be fun to play in.

Here's the discussion about the guided procedural tech

Pretty amazing, and probably the best way to fill a planet/universe and have any kind of creative control.

I so wanted to support this years ago but it looks like an insanely greedy cash grab falling into an endless void of bullshit promises and little truth falling out of the other end of it. I find it galling they have the balls to ask 3 figures as a standard rate for most of anything decent to use in the game from the ships and now the tanks. Mind you, more so they can find that many stooges who don't see what's going on and keep throwing money at it.

I'd love for it to succeed, even in part, if it were like the Wing Commander like single player bit of it as I'd buy that, for a reasonable NORMAL retail like pricing, not this buy a ship, buy some better ship, or ship upgrades for $50 here $500 there as that's insane.

Maybe Crytek will knock some sense into them with the lawsuit.

So they have to ask for all that money because they brought 'Maverick' back to voice this new battled hardened veteran.

Looks like Mark....sounds like Mark....and has facial expressions like Mark...yeap....the cycle is now complete I guess?

I'm still looking forward to tomorrow's sq42 update--but I'm not really into this for the sq42 campaign like I am the open world feature creep. I'll still certainly play sq42 when it comes out, naturally. I don't think I've ever finished a linear wing commander title, but I've gotten my money's worth out of them.

I don't especially see the hold up on this part, though. I get the feeling it's their cinematics.

SQ42 skips right past so much of what they're working hard on now. They've had scripted missions in their live demos for a few years now, and they wouldn't even need a complex travel system when an 'autopilot' cinematic transition has worked for every wc game in the past.

It's probably not 3d assets either. Judging by prior wing commander games, the main character spends most of the first part of the game on some smaller escort carrier, fighting smaller enemies with the basic fighters, and other bigger ships wouldn't even need an interior.

Granted they also haven't firmed up physics/controls which is quite worrying, and to me indicates that pushing sq42 ep1 out the door is not any kind of higher priority.

I'd like to be wrong and it's close to release, but if it were, you'd think they'd have a demo in our hands where we are handling a very basic take off, 4 nav point patrol, land and repeat type mission to make sure the bones are good.

I totally understand the hold up on the open world stuff--what they're doing there is just nuts, and bravo if they pull even half of it off--but I don't see what's taking so long for sq42.

I'm still watching it, but it looks nice. What stands out to me so far is how everybody greets the character in the passageway. It amazes me how much that helps out. Why don't more military-themed games/movies do that?

Looks like this is also the first wing commander where I'm going to need a map of the ship just to get around.
