segagamer99 #1 Posted October 12, 2012 (edited) Hey guys, I'm loving my new ColecoVision. I have lots of excellent games for it, and I'm having a great time. Only problem is, the awful controllers! Any replacement or custom controllers I can use? I tried the Genesis pad, but that didn't work too great. Also, my tv makes very strange and loud garbley static noises. It's only for this system, as I already have a new, sg-1000 and genesis hooked up to it. Any suggestions and ideas would be great. Happy gaming! +grips03 #2 Posted October 12, 2012 why didn't Genesis work good? What other console controllers do you like?
segagamer99 #3 Posted October 12, 2012 I used Pitfall with the Genesis controller. I couldn't go left and Pitfall Harry studdered across the screen. I like my SG-1000 controller, but I don't think that worked.
Yurkie #4 Posted October 13, 2012 You may be interested in my ball knob mod and refurbishing for the ColecoVision controller. Info links are in my signature. If you insist on using another controller I would recommend the 2600 joystick. IMO the ColecoVision needs to be played with a joystick and not a gamepad. +grips03 #5 Posted October 13, 2012 I'm not sure what type of connector the SG-1000 has but could you add a connector to the CV controller and wire it such that when you press a button on the SG-1000's control pad it simulates pressing the button on the CV controller. Or make a SG-1000 to CV cable to adapt the pinout?
Armonigann #6 Posted October 13, 2012 I'll trade you my well working Colecovision, for that nifty SG1000 you got there...
Zenimus #7 Posted October 13, 2012 A lot of the static can be eliminated if you use one of those RCA to RF adapters instead of the older style RF antenna converters. Regarding the controllers, yeah, I don't know what the CV designers were thinking. I absolutely love the Colecovision, but it's stock controllers (and even the Super Action Controllers) are just plain hellish to use. Yurkie, do your controller refurbishments include microswitches? I love how clicky and precise they are.
segagamer99 #8 Posted October 13, 2012 Update: My SG-1000 pad works. I guess I didn't put in in all the way Still though, what do the ball knob controllers do? Can you show me a picture?
NIAD #9 Posted October 13, 2012 (edited) Yurkie completely overhauls the original Coleco made controller (inside and out, contacts, etc.) and if you want will remove the disc shaped knob on the controller with a ball-knob that is threaded onto the shaft and he also offers to straighten the coiled cable so that you can sit about 6 feet from the console. The ball-knob mod makes using and holding the controller 100x better and making diagonal movements is improved tremendously. No parts are swapped out (ie: no micro switches added for that clicky response/feel), everything is original internally. Check out the following link for more info. on what Yurkie offers.... http://www.atariage....esday-may-30th/ Edited October 13, 2012 by NIAD
sega_SHARK #10 Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) Yurkie does Great Mods to the Colecovision. The ball knobs are much more comfortable to use, the straight cords are a plus too. It makes a world of difference. I'm usually a d-pad guy myself, but the CV works great with a joystick. Playing Pac-Man Collection on a YurkieVision is the way to go!
