lucifershalo #1 Posted October 18, 2012 I have Altirra.... played it yesterday, but it didnt "get" some games and crashed a lot.... maybe I should update or change for another emulator?
Rybags #2 Posted October 18, 2012 Can't say I've had stable/landmark releases of Altirra crash on me. For accuracy of hardware it's the best. Ease of use is debatable, but Atari800Win+ and Altirra probably come out on top. Depends what you want. Altirra is by far the most desirable to use when developing/debugging/hacking software and even some hardware. If just playing games is all you want then A800Win+ or maybe even one of the others like Rainbow might suit you better.
Creature XL #3 Posted October 18, 2012 I have Altirra.... played it yesterday, but it didnt "get" some games and crashed a lot.... maybe I should update or change for another emulator? Have you tried switching it to "PAL"? AFAIR it defaults to NTSC and "mdoern" games do not work. However, if you mean that Altirra crashes, I can't confirm that. Never crashed here and I use it alot for debugging.
lucifershalo #4 Posted October 18, 2012 thanks I downloaded the 3 Altirra, Rainbow and A800Win+ they are all different some games are working with one but not the other ones etc the wonderful world of retro computer thanks anyway;)
Mclaneinc #5 Posted October 18, 2012 There's also A800 for Win32 / SDL but for accuracy and ease of use I'd have to flag Altirra way ahead. If you are having crashing games I'd bet its down to configuration of the game ie needs XL mode but in 800B mode etc etc.. I'd be more than happy to test and help you with any games you are having issues with under Altirra. Just pop a list on here with the image name including any version number for the ATR etc.
mimo #6 Posted October 18, 2012 which games are you having trouble with?
lucifershalo #7 Posted October 18, 2012 Altirra is crashing all the time now
Mclaneinc #8 Posted October 18, 2012 Version 1.5 is VERY old.. http://www.virtualdub.org/beta/Altirra-2.20-test10.zip That is the very latest version and ignore the beta, Altirra's build are normally VERY stable even in beta. Lastly, that configuration is a little odd you were running, 800B = An old 800 which normally had a max of 48K so 320 is a tad excessive but unlikely for the reason it crashed. Try the version I've linked to and let me know if you still have a crash.
Paul Westphal #9 Posted October 18, 2012 I use Atari 800 Win+. It's not perfect, but I like the interface and options.

flashjazzcat #12 Posted October 18, 2012 Setting up the new computer, I must say I didn't even install Atari800WinPlus this time. Altirra for the win.
Shawn Jefferson #13 Posted October 19, 2012 Altirra is great, but it's Windows only, which precludes using it on some platforms (ARM based for instance.)
Mclaneinc #14 Posted October 19, 2012 Its never going to work on WOPR
w1k #15 Posted October 19, 2012 because windows is the best too.. like altirra
kenjennings #16 Posted October 20, 2012 Altirra rocks. I've been using 2.20 pre-release for weeks. It runs great. The only thing that could make it better is if it ran on linux.
svenski #17 Posted October 20, 2012 Agreed, Altirra certainly has the edge now.
Shawn Jefferson #18 Posted October 20, 2012 Its never going to work on WOPR Too bad! "Want to play a game?" would have better consequences...
+wood_jl #19 Posted October 20, 2012 Altirra is incredible! Download the latest version, and try again. I only recently tried it for the first time, so I never used any old versions. Everything I threw at it worked perfectly.
wesmond #20 Posted October 20, 2012 Yep, Altirra is totally excellent, and Avery's attention to detail, and his knowledge of Atari is stunning. But you really must download the latest version. It's a bit unfair to post "Altirra is crashing all the time now" against a version released in January 2010...
Xuel #21 Posted October 20, 2012 Altirra is great. Some of my favorite features: - Emulates latest hardware add-ons: - VBXE - MapRam - Ultiamte1MB - latest IDE devices - etc. - Nested CPU History - Emulation of every quirk in the book. Indeed, phaeron wrote the book, i.e. the Altirra Hardware Reference Manual. - GTIA and ANTIC visualization modes. - Overscan modes and Extended PAL height - Accurate NTSC And PAL Artifacting modes - High performance (Press F1 to fly through slow parts of a program) - Runs under Linux with Wine - Constant updates and engagement of the author here at AtariAge. Thanks phaeron!
candle #22 Posted October 20, 2012 lucifershalo: little peculiar setup you have there, 800 OS-B rom with 320kb of memory - really? and NTSC? set it to xl/xe hardware with apriopriate os, and PAL, memory size is good
