Ms. Pac-Man / Galaga Class of 1981 Easter egg...

Recommended Posts

Okay, so it's probably well-known by now that there are two Easter eggs in this console: 1) hidden (semi-original) Pac-Man game, and 2) speedup hack.

So...On several different actual coin-ops, I have never been able to get the speedup hack to work -- even though I get the prize-eaten sound effect confirming it. One person told me it works on a toggle, but I blew three bucks to learn that it doesn't. However, on the MAME ROM, I have no problem, and it's only a per-game thing....once you enable the speedup hack, after the game ends the speed goes back to normal...

Was there a revision or something that might have disabled the speedup? I've always been able to get the almost-original Pac-Man....

Yes,

Namco made a few revisions to the boards. At least 3 that I know of. (one simple eprom swap was required)

So it is possible that the code was "removed" on one of them.

I remember that one revision was to correct the Galaga high score glitch / bug that earlier versions had.

My memory is not so great right now on what the other one did.

I have found that all of the Pacman/Galaga coin-ops I have deposited quarters in, have the speed-hack permanently enabled, but ironically she moves at normal speed on the demo screen. It plays a wee bit too fast for me. Not like the original Ms Pacman at all, but Galaga plays flawless. Maybe the speed-hack is controlled by dip-switches? Greedy arcade operators...

I have a Reunion arcade game.

You can enable Pac-Man by the code, that's pretty easy.

I was aware of the speed-up code but never tried that on mine. You can control the speed-up on either Ms. Pac or Galaga via settings on the board. Thankfully you can set them independently as I hate slow Ms. Pac-Man as much as double-shot Galaga :) Ie.. One game is boring slow (Ms Pac) the other is too easy fast (Galaga).

Pac-Man will mimic the settings of Ms. Pac so if your game has Ms. Pac set on fast then Pac-Man will be fast as well.
