jc78_2005 #1 Posted November 6, 2012 my first homebrew purchase is on the way to me! got a good deal from a member of AA, and can not wait to receive it. I do have a question for those that own the game, does anyone use one of the joystick attachments out there(stickler, quick-shot) it just seems appropriate for Donkey Kong. jc78_2005 #3 Posted November 6, 2012 im an intv guy and find the disc is better, once you master the disc, you will see it much better. its an acquired taste I do like the disc, i have been working on what fits me best in which way to hold the controller, and it is very comfortable, when i think of DK I just think Joystick lol. old habits i suppose. jc78_2005 #4 Posted November 6, 2012 I really appreciate the controller on slam dunk. once i got comfortable with the passing system, it really shows how far ahead of any other basketball game of time it was .
IntellivisionDude #5 Posted November 6, 2012 I prefer the disc but i know a couple of friends on Youtube that prefer the Stickler. Some people will just never love the disc no matter what and it's a shame. lol
pimpmaul69 #6 Posted November 6, 2012 sticklers werk great on games that are 4 way. absolutely suck on games like auto racing.
Carl Mueller Jr #7 Posted November 6, 2012 Is this the Intelligentvision release? While a great collectible, the Elektronite version has much better control. You could always hold on to the Intelligentvision version and purchased the Elektronite ROM. By the way, you can now order it through my blog (if you prefer): http://www.carlmuellerjr.com
jc78_2005 #8 Posted November 6, 2012 It is indeed the Intelligentvision release. i do plan on ordering the rom of the Elektronite release. thanks for the link, and for the release of such an awesome arcade title! i assumed the stickler was best for 4 way games like Donkey Kong, Pacman, etc. but i do ok with the disc on Burgertime with the disc. im just gonna have to try it both ways lol. Games For Your Intellivision #9 Posted November 6, 2012 The Rom is a good choice if you have an Intellicart, Cuttle Cart, or emulator you want to play it on. However, if you want the cart, they will be available again in the new year, complete in box. The box should be printed mid to end of January

DZ-Jay #17 Posted November 6, 2012 (edited) At this stage I only have the Inteligentvision version of this game because I thought the Electronite version was the same apart from the extra levels. I am now interested but this is the first time I have heard that it has "much better control" Please tell me more. Along with the Elektronite version (and D2K, by the way, which is excellent!), you may also want to try Christmas Carol. The reason I'm plugging it here is three-fold: you seem to enjoy home-brews, you like arcade games, and it uses also a 4-way control scheme like Pac-Man's and Donkey Kong's that is very fluid. In Christmas Carol, the control scheme is rather unique in that it has some special heuristics to try to determine the proper direction no matter at which point of the disc you press. It reads all 16 directions, not just the cardinal points. It is designed specifically for the "rolling-thumb-around" technique, which is typical and intuitive on the Intellivision disc. You can roll your thumbs to change directions and the game will try to determine your actual intention. It works rather well and fluid, if I may say so myself. That is not to say that it is better than Carl's DK, not at all. It is a different technique for a different set of requirements: unlike Donkey Kong, and like Pac-Man, Christmas Carol is continually in motion until she hits a wall, so the disc is used purely to change directions, not necessarily to engage movement. You can try the old "demo" of Christmas Carol if you'd like, which is free to download. It's only one level, and it's missing a lot of polish, but the control scheme is essentially the same. -dZ. InfraMan #19 Posted November 6, 2012 my first homebrew purchase is on the way to me! got a good deal from a member of AA, and can not wait to receive it. I do have a question for those that own the game, does anyone use one of the joystick attachments out there(stickler, quick-shot) it just seems appropriate for Donkey Kong. I have a set of Sticklers and a set of those clip-on ball-top sticks. The Sticklers are OK, but they tend to get jammed up under the circular lip of the opening sometimes, which is annoying. I was surprised to find that the clip-on sticks were much more comfortable and reliable, since I wasn't expecting much from them. Just make sure they have the little foam piece underneath! DZ-Jay #20 Posted November 6, 2012 I had a couple of sticky things for the controllers when I was a kid. I don't think they were "Sticklers," but they were similar. They looked rather like a chess pawn, with a wider base and a ball-top, and small like the chess piece. They had a sticky surface on the bottom and the instructions suggested you peeled the metallic disc plate from the controller surface in order to properly adhere the stick. Well, they turned out to be cheap and cheesy, and very much crap. They were so small, you couldn't grab them with your hand, yet, taller than what was comfortable using your thumb while holding the controller on your palm. I then tried to remove them and re-stick the golden plate on the disc, but I had warped it in the removal process. From then on, my Intellivision controller was never the same. Perhaps it was a good thing The Bitch kept it, which made me get a new one in the recent years. A silver lining on every cloud. LOL! dZ. P.S. I don't know if the Sticklers are any better, but they do look of higher quality than my Crap Stick .

Great info dZ and I have actually been playing Carol for quite some time now, since around beta 5 or so but I don't think I have tried the "rolling thumb" technique which you describe as I am more of a control "stabber" with this game and find myself attacking the disc with a thumb or finger in the direction I want to turn so next time I play I will employing a gentler approach and hope my score improves. Oh, and Carol in it's completed form has been ordered and is on the way to me although it is taking a round about route as I recently got a message from Joe to advise that the game had ended up in a post office in Germany. Maybe a postal sorter miss-read "Australia" as "Austria"? I will just have to be patient for it to arrive after Carol has done her world tour. Hmm, could this be another variant? The "world edition version"

It merely says "Missent," and has for a couple days. Not inspiring. It wasn't just any post office, it was a military post office at an APO. Maybe Carol's doing a USO tour? I am now interested but this is the first time I have heard that it has "much better control" Please tell me more. According to my blog, these are the enhancements made in the Elektronite version: – Smoother gameplay, 3x more responsive controls – Improved enemy AI, nearly identical to the arcade – Never heard before voices, discovered in the arcade's ROM – The infamous DK "growl", including an alternate "correct" version (selectable) – Option to play using the Japanese screen ordering (no repetition of screens, pie factory is the second board!)
