TI-99 Burgertime and Microsurgeon

Recommended Posts

Just picked up a TI-99 Computer with a bunch of extras (posted in the Thrift Finds Forum if anyone is interested in seeing it) and included were Burgertime and Microsurgeon! Anyone know if the TI version of these are any good?

They're both excellent titles! 99/4A BurgerTime was the first version of BurgerTime that I ever played, and it's still one of my favorites. Microsurgeon is an enhanced version of the Intellivision original, and it makes good use of the 99/4A Speech Synthesizer.

Both are great ports to play on the TI. "Virus virus!". I'll also throw "Donkey Kong" into the list of "Great ports for the TI" list. Sure, the pogo sticks are missing in the 3rd level, but it does have the pie factory level.

The TI-99/4A was my first computer, just as the Intellivision was my first real video game system. (I define "real" as "takes a cartridge or otherwise can get new games" as opposed to "plays 6 variants of Pong.")

I didn't have either Microsurgeon or Burgertime.

I did have Demon Attack, and I have to say I much prefer the Intellivision version. The TI version ostensibly had better graphics, but the Intellivision version seemed like it played better. Plus I liked how the Intellivision version sounded better. As I recall, the TI version lacked the legion of interlocked "birds", and most of the aliens flew the same random 45-degree diamonds. The Intellivision version seemed to offer more variety and creativity in the game play.

I played the bejeebus out of Moon Patrol, Parsec and Hopper. Other titles that held significant amounts of my attention included: The Attack, Jawbreaker II, Super Fly, BigFoot, SewerMania, Meteor Belt, TI Invaders, MunchMan, Protector II, M*A*S*H, and Shamus. I even have a special place in my heart for Alpiner and Car Wars, and spent plenty of time with both, though both kinda suck. Blasto has pretty neat game play, but the pacing sucks a bit and the music sucks harder. I never quite got the hang of the Scott Adams Adventure series back in the day, though I think now they deserve a second look.

Story Machine is an unexpected delight, just for its unusualness, and the wackiness it lets you animate. ("ZOT" is a verb? WTF is a "Bumpus"?) Video Graphs was occasionally fun, if you like playing with Conway's Life. And Star Trek was "ok", in as much as it had impressive graphics, but the game play was a bit slow and predictable.
