Need a switch box

Recommended Posts

I just inherited a 4-port 5200 that has everything EXCEPT the switch box. Does anyone have an extra they would like to sell, or know of a source for a decent price? The thing is, I don't want to spend a fortune because I have no idea if the 5200 even works. Or the controllers could be shot. I'm hoping some kind soul will help me get my 5200 collection started.

Thanks.

It is not very hard. The hardest part is removing the existing, large capacitor from the board. A solder gun and solder sucker is what I used.

Agreed, not a hard nod at all. I was hoping to just clip the lead but that sucker is right up against the board so you have to go at it from under the board. I heated up the 3 solder joint round-robin while pulling on the cap. That got it out eventually.

IMHO, a desoldering tool is required for anyone who's gonna hard mod a console, period. It's impossible to remove ICs without one. Additionally, it let's you get 30 year old solder off the board wile you're modding.

I'm not trying to bash anyone here; this tool really makes modding a lot easier!

Can you post a link or picture of the tool you prefer? Thanks.

Not too expensive, but quite effective. If you're looking for sophisticated temperature control or ESD safe, this ain't it. But, I have used one like this (or at least very similar) for a long time with a lot of success. The one I have is available a lot of places, but I can't think of where I got mine at the moment.

This looks to be exactly the one I have:

I could probably post links ad nauseum, but I think you get the point of how generic and widely available it is.

I was only familiar with the kind that sucks only, meaning you heat with a separate soldering iron, then suck with the tool. I always mess it up since I'm no good using both hands at the same time (it makes me wish for a third hand). Yours is a much better design, and I'll go look for one of those now. Thanks for teaching me something new!
