Are ROMs available for these? (...other than Christmas Carol, of course)

I know that Carl Mueller, Jr. has made the D1K and D2K ROMs available, personalized with your name in the credits. He was having a Christmas Sale until the end of the year. Perhaps if you hurry you can persuade him to extend it a few extra hours. :)

As for the ones distributed by IntelligentVision, you may want to contact intvdave to see if he has plans to make the ROMs available.

Hmmm ... what game to choose. If anyone really cares, here's my rationale. This really came down to two games (just like IntellivisionDude) D2K and Carol.

Carol is an original concept that was executed perfectly. It's simple in that you only have four things to do (move up, down, left or right) but is complex enough that it's not easy to master. The cut scenes in between levels give it a retro feel that I really enjoy. I played this game far more than I've played another Intellivision game in a long time.

D2K is a marvel. One of the best Donkey Kong games that I've played on any console, let alone a 30 year old one. This game pushes the Intellivision to it's limits and then pushes some more. I've done enough playing around with programming that I understand how difficult that this game was to be made. The complexities boggle my mind.

So ... which wins ... I could vote for either and be justified. I could vote for both, but I think that's a cop out. So, in the end, my vote goes to Carol.

I go this way for two reasons. First, it's not just a game ... but a story, and an original one at that. I like original concepts ... and I know that they are a hard sell (just look at Hollywood, when was the last time there was a huge, box office success from an original movie?). Secondly, because I see myself playing it more than D2K in the future.

Both games are fantastic and kudos to both the programmers. I for one am truly thrilled to have wonderful programmers still involved with the Intellivision.

Can't wait to see what 2013 holds.

Although this poll is essentially meaningless for various reasons (one being that I seriously doubt people have had enough time to properly evaluate dZ's game for things such as, for example, replayability), I find it really irritating that people are choosing Christmas Carol over D2K, the foremost reason being that it is supposedly "original".

How many maze games versus platform games are there on the Intellivision, exactly? There have also been many other holiday-themed games done on plenty of other platforms over the years, including on the Intellivision (at least in demo form). I might also comment that the game bears more than a passing resemblance to Pac-Man, which is no bad thing, but doesn't do much to support an argument for originality.

Maybe it's the season, or the games "newness", but I really think you people are giving this game a bit too much credit. It's a cute game with nice little intermissions, but to cite the strength of its "story" as a deciding factor between the two games… is really stretching things. Since when did good classic games have coherent stories anyway?

It's funny. I read story after story about how Coleco's Donkey Kong ruined peoples' childhoods. And when someone delivers that redemption, and so much more, it really doesn't mean much after all.

I think you answered your own questions. It could very well be the fact Carol is new and fresh, it's the holiday season, and we just had an extensive and very fun High Score Competition to go with it. I bet ya if we just finished a D2K HSC and the game was fresh in everybody's mind the poll could be different. But like you said it's just a poll and nothing to fret over, just like i need to stop fretting over not winning a patch. The scrooge in me came out yesterday.

I think this video says it best.

Carol had a great competition, I think we got four new Atariage users who joined the site to post his scores!

It must say something about the game...

But not only this, one good reason we don't play homebrews in our loved HSC is the fact roms aren't available.

I know DIIK's rom was available for only 10 dollars, but still not the same as putting them available for free!

For originality, I would say Christmas Carol can be ported to android and be a great success, it's fully a James' game.

BTW, I hope it comes true ; )

To me concepts are very, very important; if you compare donkey kong with future development of Mario franchise you see how far Christmas Carol can go.

I even got some ideas based on the great intermissions.

Much can be achieved when you start with a brilliant simple concept. Originality comes from origin, a simple and promising beginning, just like old donkey kong.

P.S.: I'm a happy owner of both homebrews and I voted for both a while back!

Why on Earth do I feel that I need to defend my opinion ... very well.

Replayability. Last night, the HSC was over ... I could have played ANY game in my extensive collection. I chose to play Carol ... enough said.

Anyone who knows the origins of the game understand that it started with Pac Man as the basis ... but he created his own concept. He created a game with new characters. An evil lumbering snowman, a ghost that likes presents and a toy gone bad. At the end, you have a goal (saving Christmas).

D2K is a fantastic game, but at the end of the day, it's Donkey Kong. A FAN-FLIPPING-TASTIC version of Donkey Kong, but, to me at least, still Donkey Kong.

Carol is more of an original ... and that, to me, holds some value. I like new things (although, Defender of the Crown trumps that being an all time favorite of mine!)

Maybe it's the season, or the games "newness", but I really think you people are giving this game a bit too much credit. This part just comes off condescending to me and doesn't do you credit. Give Carol it's due ... it's fun, an original concept (albeit borrowing from other games like pac man), has nice extras (cut scenes) with a final goal that adds a sense of accomplishment (saving Christmas).

I've been one of your biggest fans and an advocate of DK Arcade and D2K ... you quoted me on your blog for heaven's sake lauding the game. I love your work and I certainly didn't post my opinions to bring you any kind of dissappointment or irritation. Please don't take it that way.

To show off the Intellivision to one of my friends, I showed your game vs the original Donkey Kong. There truly is no comparison.

As far as which one I have enjoyed playing more, and believe I will in the future, it's Carol. It's a unique title to the Intellivision and that meant something to me.

My two cents ( if it's worth even that much ;) )

I think that anyone can have a personal preference with what games they like or don't like on the Intellivision.....I like Buzz Bombers a lot and play it a lot when i play Intellivision, but many don't.

I think what is irritating to Carl, (And, i don't mean to speak for him - I might be wrong) is that people cite 'originality' as a reason for liking Carol over D2K........you like what you like.....but D2K is no less 'original' than Carol.

Carol is just as much a Pac Man variation, as D2K is a Donkey Kong variation in my opinion..... 5 original screens is just as 'original' in my mind as changing the pelets to candy, and the power ups as snowflakes, and the fruit as presents and the ghosts to a snowman.....Carol is just as original as Lock N' Chase which is a Pac Man variation.

Some people don't like Donkey Kong at all - Like Chad Schell, who recognized that DK Arcade was a GREAT version of DK, but hates DK.

Some people don't like Pac Man game play. I like both. Both Carol and D2K are worthy games to own. However, from a simple programming point of view, I think D2K is much more impressive.

Regardless of which title wins 'Game of the Year'....it is simply 'Atari Age Game of the Year'.....it is largely meaningless......now, if Video Game Critics declared my game 'Game of the Year', or I lost 'Game of the Year' from some credible Video Game Critics.....I might care a bit more either way.

However, I didn't spend months of hard work like DZ and Carl did making their games, so to me it is meaningless....but I am pretty sure it would be important to them. But, I don't see the benefit of having 'beauty contests' like this in such a small community.

Different opinions is ok.

I hope this thread doesn't go bad.

But I would say (...) But, I don't see the benefit of having 'beauty contests' like this in such a small community (...)

is a too strong argument because it turns against all homebrew efforts for intellivision as in I don't see the benefit of having ' beauty games' in such a small community.

Answer is love for intellivision, love for our community to organize a contest, love for christmas carol as showed in all votes.

It won't. I truly enjoy both programs ... but in the end, I believe in choosing one.

Choosing the game of the year was a beauty contest, just like choosing my wife. There were so many options to choose from and each were beautiful in their own special way. There was the cheerleader twins from the Elektronite University. There was the blond bombshell from Intelligentvisionville. Finally, there was the cutie with the somewhat pointy ears from Albuquerque. There were so many beautiful women in my life that wanted my affections but yet, at the end of the day, only one of the lucky ladies could win.

Ah yes, if only my love life had been nearly as exciting as my Intellivision life in 2012

(bonus points to the first person to connect the dots of how Albuquerque and Christmas Carol are related ...)

I am not sure what you are trying to say.....but just to be clear.....what I mean by a 'beauty contest' is deciding which game is 'best'.....

Lot's of people are working hard to bring out the best possible games for their favourite system. They do their best, and having one title held up as 'the best' is not in my opinion helpful. Some people would argue that competition is a good thing........but I would only agree in a larger market.

I thought you were referring to Carol's contest. If this one is good...Not sure but it shouldn't hurt anyone's feeling. What I really wanted is the ability to buy all games of the year, it's a bad thing to see all those sold out games. This would certainly be good.

I say we should have an impromptu unofficial D2K high score competition just for the hell of it. I been wanting to play it some more and i need an excuse to. Why do i need an excuse? I have a hard time getting away from the computer these days and i'm being serious. I have hundreds of games i want to play but day after day i can't get away from the computer and i need motivation. Sometimes it takes competitions to motivate me. lol
