Game Gear Mods?

Recommended Posts

Is any one doing Game Gear mods? I feel like their is an awesome library of games that I'm missing out on because of the TERRIBLE screen that comes factory. I've seen a few awesome mods on youtube, but it doesn't look like any one is offering this kind of thing as a service.

Yes, there are folks who do them, but I don't know right off who. You might try the.golden.ax on here.

Are you sure the unit doesn't need a cap kit instead? I've got one Game Gear that I've had since new, it's had zero repairs, and the screen is sill sharp as a knife.

Every Game Gear I've ever attempted to play was to blurred for me to deal with.

You might track down one of the Majesco made Game Gears. Those have much higher quality screens than the original.

mod it with a tv out so you can hook it up to a tv.

Something I've always wondered is why isn't the open space below the screen used for this? AS you look at the unit, if you look down just below the screen, there's that round part. Inside the case, that's open space. A TV out board could be built to fit in there instead of hogging up the battery compartments.

Already been done.

What Kind of mods do you offer?

He replaces the capacitors. Those were a major reason that the screens would get dim, blurry, etc. Also sound fails due to bad caps. SEGA used bad ones.

I don't think they are any different than the original.

Believe me, they are very different. I got two at a thrift, both were comparably superior to the Sega made unit I had at the time. The screen is incredibly less prone to the "motion smearing" that Game Gear's are known to have. The Majesco units were made over 10 years after the Sega units, and it shows.

Maybe they just look better because they have capacitors that are ten years younger...

I don't think that's the case, even recapped original Game Gears have worse screens than the Majesco GG and the latter has better quality caps.

Agreed on the Majesco screens. They do seem to have better contrast and a touch less blur. The screen cover scratches if you look at it wrong, but that's another story :)
