A_Locomotive #1 Posted December 22, 2012 So who else has a Neo Geo X on the way? Long time Neo Geo lover, always wanted an AES or CD but funds were always an issue so had to snag one of these as soon as I found out they went on sale which breing the idiot I am I only realized a week ago. hehe Can't wait to get it, should arrive the day before christmas, a little gift to myself. OldSchoolRetroGamer #2 Posted December 22, 2012 Not interested in another handheld that emulates a console and plays ROMS, oh they are specially encoded roms with an OS that loads only those licensed by SNK but when you boil it down that is exactly what it is only now it's "officially branded" and you can pay for future ROMS officially released under the SNK brand name. I have heard many reports of it not being perfect emulation either with some slowdown. There also has been no official stance that they will actually release furue titles, I fear it may be a quick cash in by SNK for the NEO GEO fanboys. I am betting IF the "game card" slot is actually just an SD card slot (even the included game card resembles an SD card) it will not be long until this thing is exploited allowing one to load their very own NEO GEO roms onto it. It MIGHT be worth considering at that point but I still have like a half dozen handhelds that already emulate NEO GEO in addition to multiple other consoles/computers. I can live without the "official" branding. You can find a number of unboxings and details in Youtube already. Looks nice I guess.

bojay1997 #4 Posted December 22, 2012 People on Neo-Geo.com have been physically tearing it apart in the last few days and apparently the handheld is actually a Dingoo with a slightly better processor running the Fire Burn Alpha emulator. The video output on the docking unit is poor for many televisions and is being reported as dark or full of video tearing and artifacting. People are also reporting poor audio output. The stick seems to be getting good reviews, but I'm not sure what use that is if the docking station output isn't good. Definitely looks to be something to wait on either for a price drop or an enhanced version.
OldSchoolRetroGamer #5 Posted December 22, 2012 Well the stick is USB as people have said it works well in MAME (hey you could play NEO GEO in that too!).
A_Locomotive #6 Posted December 22, 2012 (edited) I have read all the mixed things as well but I'm not to worried, I know there is tons of ways to emulate but I've never been great at getting them to work, I have had some luck with my Caanoo but I don't like the stick on it for fighting games. I figure it will be fun for what it is. Edited December 22, 2012 by A_Locomotive
Reaperman #7 Posted December 22, 2012 I was pretty surprised when a childhood friend popped up on the wife's facebook stating that he had one. He hasn't had much of an interest in neo geo or video gaming in the past. How's the display? Wrong aspect ratio?
A_Locomotive #8 Posted December 22, 2012 Mine arrives monday and I'll let you know reaperman, I know its aspect ratio is wrong in both aspect options, I've read mixed things about the screen.

Aspect ratio can be changed from stretched to proper 4:3 mode with the push of a button from what I have seen....

goldenegg #11 Posted December 23, 2012 I had one pre-ordered, but cancelled it after I got to try one. There's nothing terribly wrong with the handheld itself. It doesn't feel cheap and the screen is decent. I found the headphone jack to be pretty low power, as I had it at maximum for a set of standard earbuds which shouldn't need that much juice. The docking station just seemed flimsy and rushed. You can tell the they simply chose a handheld someone was already manufacturing, rather than design the whole system from scratch. The docking mechanism is nothing more than a port replicator and feels quite cheap when docking/undocking. The controller is the best part of the set. It feels pretty much just like an original stick and it works great on both Windows and Mac systems. Overall, I felt this whole package to be extremely overpriced. They really should have at least doubled the amount of games for launch, even if it would only be for the deluxe set. While this appears to have been an extremely popular purchase this holiday season (at retailers are sold out), I believe the interest will die down quickly and you'll find these at a discount by the summer. OldSchoolRetroGamer #13 Posted December 23, 2012 man, I wish SoCalMike didn't talk out of his ass so much. This guy likes to spew nothing but garbage. Lol what is it you have a problem with? Just seems to have fun, enjoy his hobby without taking any of it so seriously. I don't get it, what is the "garbage" you speak of?
Satoshi Matrix #14 Posted December 23, 2012 I enjoy RGR and some of his thoughts, but when it comes to hardware, SoCalMike talks out his ass. He just doesn't go into depth or have a clear understanding of what he's covering. He does unboxing videos and labels them as reviews. Even in this video "The Wii U isn't much different than the Wii" and people thought the NeoGeo X was a "hoax". He constantly refers to the sound microswitches make without actually using the correct term. He's also the person who has literally went to a swap meet saw someone who was selling Battletoads/Double Dragon for NES for $10, and offered $3. He kinda pisses me off. With this kind of attitude, it sounds more to me like you might benefit from pulling out whatever stick is up your ass.

Always considered him just someone who collects, has fun and yeah likes to haggle and bargain, nothing wrong with that. A_Locomotive #19 Posted December 23, 2012 LOL Took even less time than I thought it would......... Lmao, same! I was hoping this would happen but wasn't expecting it for a while! My Neo Geo X arrvies tomorrow, I'll post pics and share my thoughts on it when it arrives. This is the first big addition to my collection(as in not just a random game here and there) since I took a break from the video game scene earlier this year(glad to be back by the way missed the forum!).
Satoshi Matrix #20 Posted December 23, 2012 lol what? It's not personal. Like I said, I enjoy some of what he has to say and I think he has good taste in retro gaming. That said, he's the butt of the other host's jokes because what he says things out of left field and often doesn't explain his thoughts towards certain things at all. Any of his solo segments on RVR are always a total disaster.
OldSchoolRetroGamer #21 Posted December 23, 2012 (edited) For those who haven't already seen this, the system has been hacked: http://www.substance...icially-hacked/ Here I found the video missing from the article: http://youtu.be/hJ52kLNsksE Honestly, I think it was all part of their plan, THINK ABOUT IT, those not into this, those that just want the product AS IS will buy it and buy any future games released (though nothing confirmed yet) the small percentage that wanted this were not going to buy it as is, now they WILL buy it for this reason..... FROM ARTICLE: Neo Geo X has been hacked (not completely but getting there) For the moment, the ROM has to be renamed to one of the on board games in order to work, in this case the game Metal Slug was swapped for a ROM of Andro Dunos. You’ll noticed Metal Slug was selected on the menu, but instead Andro Dunos was loaded. However I imagine this limitation will be overcome very quickly. Satoshi Matrix #22 Posted December 23, 2012 If the hacking takes off and I can actually put my own NeoGeo games (hopefully NGPC too?!) I'll buy this in a heartbeat. As it is it's a pass for me.
otaku #23 Posted December 24, 2012 I used to own an AES this seems like a nice bit of emulation a good way to support SNK still etc. but nothing beats owning the real thing and for the money you could pick up an aes just need quite a bit more for some games I had over 1200 in my small bit of games with mine. Miss it! Perhaps I'll grab one of these once they come up cheaper and or used.

Owning an original Neo Geo AES has been a dream of mine for a long time, almost bought one a few times, last being when a local store had one for sale, price seemed very reasonable to me... until I looked behind the counter and saw the price tags on the games. :S I think when I eventually get a Neo Geo I'll likely go for the CD, yeah its not as cool(though still kick ass and I'd rack the more rounded top loader version up amongst the best look consoles) but its just so much more cost effective.
