What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2013 (Season 6)

Recommended Posts

I hope it doesn't take as many more minutes to get the maximum score on Kaboom!. 94574 !!!

I haven't been able to get balanced lately. I try too hard. I don't try hard enough.

I don't think I'm getting burnt out. I'm just getting frustrated.

According to Wikipedia, it takes at least 2 hours 46 minutes to get the maximum score, so you should fit up to 32 perfect rounds before the total amount of time spent will exceed 100,000 minutes. ;-)

Wikipedia is wrong. I once got to 250,000 in one hour and I was going as fast as possible. So it would take 4 hours at that pace, which is very difficult to maintain for 4 hours.

SG-1000

Safari Race: 23 min

This week I set two new personal bests on Metagalactic Llamas, first 78340 pts and then 83862 pts. Safari Race was actually played on a SC-3000, but as it actually is a SG-1000 with built-in keyboard, I suppose they count as the same system. As for Thunder Force IV on the Sega Genesis/Megadrive, it is technically brilliant and one of few games that I play with my mouth agape at the visual effects. Not sure about playability for beginners though, it is known to be rather difficult.

Here are my times for this past week (July 22nd through 28th)...

Arcade:

Pacmania - 26 min.

Super Burger Time - 46 min.

Atari 8-bit:

Spare Change - 25 min.

Colecovision:

Moon Patrol (Back-hack of Matt Patrol) - 34 min.

MSX:

Burger Time - 181 min. in 4 sessions

PC (non-eligible):

BurgerTimes - 43 min.

Crash Time Plumber - 29 min.

Supermarket Management 2 - 60 min.

Since I had this week off (as well as the next two), there was more time for gaming than usual, and I played a diverse selection of games on various systems. In alphabetical order, I tried Pacmania in order to see how far I'd get with my Pac-Man playing skills. Not very far, it turned out. Then I replayed Super Burger Time and made the 2nd boss after several tries.

On the Atari 8-bit, I replayed Spare Change, but only for one game.

On the Colecovision, I tried Moon Patrol which is actually a hack of the leaked "Matt Patrol" which in turn was created at Atarisoft while porting Moon Patrol to the Colecovision. This version of the game misses some features of the arcade original (the hills with rocks and the geysyrs) although it's 32K long. Those features are present in the only 16K long C-64 version.

On the PC; I replayed two fan-made games. Crash Time Plumber is a variant of Donkey Kong, mixed with some elements of other games... before getting to the top, you have to collect the flying hearts which seem to be borrowed from Popeye.

BurgerTimes on the PC is heavily borrowed from the Intellivision version of BurgerTime, but it contains the arcade levels as well.

Supermarket Management 2 is a professional-made time management game. I played through the "free trial" period of one hour.

But the game I spent the most time on is the MSX version of Burger Time, which has got more levels than the arcade version (at least 10 vs. 6), but those are simpler constructed. Also, the animation is a bit jerky, and I've lost many lives because the pepper didn't register in time. This game is 32K in size as well, and I wonder if all of this is actually filled.

Aside from this, I've been thinking about how Puzzle Bobble might be ported to earlier systems. Since it came out in the arcade in 1995, only current systems of that time got an official port, with the earliest ones being the Game Gear and the SNES. However, there are inofficial versions of the game for the C-64 and the ZX-Spectrum, and since the ZX-Spectrum is able to do it, it should also be doable on other tile-based systems like the TI-99, Colecovision, MSX, or bitmap multicolor systems like the Bally Astrocade and even the Channel-F, with some limitations. It would be hard to do on the Intellivision because of the crude color resolution, however. The Odyssey^3 could probably do it, but I'm not sure about the Odyssey^2 and, in fact, even the NES, although it should be possible on its competitor, the SMS, because there's already a Game Gear version which should be fairly easy to port. Well, to be exact, you could probably do it on the NES, but not in full color.

My times for the week:

Genesis:

Blaster Master 2: Blasting Again - 2 min.

Block Out - 51 min.

IMG International Tour Tennis - 2 min.

Incredible Crash Test Dummies - 6 min.

Ishido: The Way of Stones - 26 min.

Junction - 99 min.

Pac-Mania - 26 min.

RBI Baseball 4 - 74 min.

Shove It! The Warehouse Game - 5 min.

Wardner - 119 min.

Wayne's World - 9 min.

Game Boy:

Mysterium - 17 min.

The Smurfs - 37 min.

PlayStation:

Gauntlet Legends - 171 min.

Beat Wardner, a nifty, well-crafted little action-platformer which I'm told is very faithful to the arcade version.

I also "beat" Block Out and Ishido for the beat-'em-all effort at Sega-16, though I won't be counting those towards my personal list. For Block Out, since the game has no ending or high score, I simply cleared one level of blocks at the fastest speed for each of the three default modes. (And that's easier said than done, I can assure you!) For Ishido, I emptied my pouch of stones (which is good) and got one 4-way combination (which is also good).

Otherwise I cleared a few more levels in the inferior PS1 port of Gauntlet Legends with my fiancée; played a couple Game Boy games while I waited for my laundry at the laundromat; won a couple more games in the season mode of RBI Baseball 4; and reached the final set of ten levels in Junction.

Gunsmoke - 10 minutes

Summer Carnival 92 - Recca - 20 minutes

Zombie Nation - 15 minutes

Tetris - 30 minutes

Tengen Tetris - 25 minutes

Playstation

Chrono Trigger - 30 minutes

Very little time for retro gaming this week, as life has been getting a bit too serious for my taste lately. I've been so busy, I even bowed out of the Intellivision Knockout Tournament, which was unfortunate. After that, I decided to play some NES! Sleep was traded to make sure at least some games were played. It's important to have one's priorities straight, after all. Anyway, back to being a cog in a big machine. Bye for now.

7. MSX (229)

8. PlayStation (201)

9. Arcade (72)

10. Game Boy (54)

An unexpected victory this week for the Atari 8-bit, which has no games in the top 5 but manages to edge out the Genesis for the top spot on the system charts, thanks to contributions from three different players.

Meanwhile Popful Mail takes the individual charts, Kaboom regains the pre-NES crown, the Acorn Electron and Sord M5 appear on the tracker for the first time, and we see the Creativision for the first time since 2011. Nice diversity indeed!

Super Mario Bros 3: 5 min

Sord M5

Real Tennis: 8 min

ZX Spectrum

Match Point: 29 min

The main theme this week was tennis games for various machines. The C64 in particular (but also the ZX as it turned out) has plenty to choose from, ranging from early 1984'ish titles to 3D ones made in 1992. However it seems the prettier the game is, the harder it is to play, even on the easiest level. Bug-Byte's Tennis for the Acorn Electron/BBC Micro looked worse than I remember it, entirely unplayable.

The VC-4000 belongs to the category of 1292 Advanced Programmable Video System, which technically is something of a predecessor to the Arcadia 2001. It doesn't seem to have entered the tracker before, and while cartridges physically are not cross-compatible in the 1292 group, the software is.

I'm sorry, I forgot to post my times for the past week at the time I usually do. But here they are... my times for the past week (July 29th through August 4th)...

Amstrad CPC:

Burgertime - 10 min.

Arcade:

Amidar - 40 min.

Burgertime - 111 min. in 4 sessions

Manhattan (DECO Cassette) - 79 min. in 2 sessions

Pleiads - 6 min.

Colecovision:

Donkey Kong Jr. - 12 min.

MSX:

Burgertime - 65 min.

NES:

Donkey Kong Jr. - 11 min.

Mario Bros. - 5 min.

Online (non-eligible):

Coin-op boy - 10 min.

PC (non-eligible):

Mario Bros. (simulated Game & Watch handheld) - 15 min.

I started off the week with some more MSX Burgertime. I think I reached Level 12, and until then the levels don't repeat, but the enemies seem to get a bit tougher. This game differs from the arcade version since the AI of the enemy types is notably different... the sausages favor horizontal movement over vertical one, while the onions like to climb ladders, i.e. they favor vertical movement over horizontal one. Then I played the Amstrad CPC version which is AWFUL! It's horribly slow, you and the enemies move very slowly, flicker without moving, and move at inconsistent speed! It happened to me multiple times that some enemy caught up and ate me because my player character didn't do one more step while the enemy made three. Some French guy must have programmed this in BASIC.

And then I played the arcade version, which seemed a bit like a Turbo version compared to the MSX one at first, and it's so much smoother! It's remarkeable how some programmers manage to destroy games by doing low framerates. Anyway... my goal on the arcade version was to make all the 6 patterns and then try to get as far as i can while they repeat... which is not that easy because as soon as the patterns repeat, the enemies speed up pretty fast, so I didn't manage to exceed Level 8.

In between that, I played an online game called Coin-op boy which is a jump'n'run game with a Super Mario-like stage and, I think, 4 subgames like Pinball and Breakout. Each subgame is actually on its own HTML page, and the whole thing was done in HTML5.

Then, in keeping with Data East games, I noticed that Manhattan is now supported in MAME. This is a game I know from back in 1981, and I didn't think I'd get to play it again. Well, now I did. Actually, it's not that great, and it pales in comparison with "Burgertime" running on the same hardware. This was followed by a short session of "Pleiads" running on Phoenix hardware and also sporting pretty similar gameplay.

Then I downloaded a simulator of the Game & Watch game "Mario Bros." by Luca Antignano, which seems to be pretty true to the original, but I can't really judge it because I don't have the original. I only played one game which lasted about 15 minutes.

Then I remembered "Amidar" and played it a bit. In fact, I still do this week, so some more Amidar times will be upcoming for the now-current week. I consider this to be some kind of a sibling to "Turtles"... back in early 1982, those two games appeared in the arcade side-by-side at the same time, they are both by Konami, came in very similar cabinets and also have a nice selection of in-game tunes which sound similarly. Until now, I managed to beat Level 4 on Amidar.

Then I played the Colecovision version of Donkey Kong Jr. While the graphics are somewhat true to the arcade, the animation is, like in MSX Burgertime, pretty jerky. I managed to die multiple times because I didn't time my jumps right, which work noticeably different than in the arcade.

For a comparison, I tried the NES version of Donkey Kong Jr. What a difference! This one has all 4 stages of the arcade version and as someone who's played the arcade version for a long time, I feel right at home because it's as close to the arcade as you get... within the limits of the NES. It's silky-smooth as in the arcade, the jumps work the same, and even most of the graphics are exactly the same, pixel-by-pixel, only in slightly different colors. And the sound had to be adapted a bit because it relies on analog circuitry in the arcade. Nintendo's NES version is vastly superior to the Coleco one, that's for sure. I think other companies like Activision and Atarisoft have shown what you can do if you really push the Colecovision to the limits.

Then I also tried the NES version of "Mario Bros." (the arcade game), which is silky-smooth as well. One notable difference to the arcade version is that you can turn around in mid-air, which isn't possible in the arcade. Otherwise, it plays much the same as in the arcade, and I think it would make a good base for a conversion to other 6502-based systems such as the Creativision.

Just got back from Las Vegas, hence the late post! I'll do the Week 31 standings tomorrow, but for the moment here are my times from the past week:

Arcade:

Altered Beast - 6 min.

Asteroids - 6 min.

Centipede - 7 min.

Frogger - 7 min.

Gun.Smoke - 2 min.

Mad Planets - 4 min.

Marble Madness - 4 min.

Mortal Kombat II - 3 min.

Paddle Battle - 4 min.

Phoenix - 6 min.

The Simpsons - 40 min.

Space Invaders - 5 min.

Street Fighter II: Championship Edition - 2 min.

Tapper - 10 min.

Tron - 8 min.

Sharp MZ-700:

Space Blaster FX - 25 min.

Genesis:

Art of Fighting - 97 min.

Junction - 11 min.

Sol-Deace - 40 min.

At the start of the week, I beat Space Blaster FX for the MZ-700 in emulation, and also beat Sol-Deace and Art of Fighting on Normal for the Sega-16 beat-'em-all. I've beaten both before on their hardest ettings, so it didn't take too long to regain some of my skills, but Art of Fighting especially is tough.

While in Vegas, I went to several different places with arcade machines. First was a store called Gamer's Paradise with free-play machines, including a couple of MAME cabinets, but we didn't spend much time there. The next day, we went to a club called Insert Coins, which had tons of games (mostly for 50 cents a pop), and ear-piercingly loud music. While there, my fiancée and I played through and beat The Simpsons, which was fun, and also tried out seven or eight other games. We were hoping to beat Altered Beast too, but when we tried to continue in Level 2 it ate our quarters!

Finally, on our last full day in Vegas, we went to the Pinball Hall of Fame, which was probably my favorite of the three places. We played several arcade games there, but unfortunately Marble Madness had a weird malfunction on my second game, and Mad Planets had a somewhat stiff fire button. However, the Pong clone Paddle Battle worked well and was surprisingly entertaining.

We also played a bunch of different pinball machines there, which don't count for the tracker, of course. We mostly favored older, electromechanical machines from the 1960s and 1970s (which also had the advantage of being cheaper!). Of the ones I played, my favorite was Snow Derby, an unexpectedly fun little machine that was apparently way ahead of its time. Theater of Magic was also an old favorite.
