xDragonWarrior #1 Posted January 3, 2013 I personally like both.Sonic games are much shorter whereas Mario games are ALOT longer than Sonic games(take New super mario bros and Sonic rush for example, the whole Sonic rush game is less than half of a Mario world).I like Sonic as the cooler character though. godslabrat #2 Posted January 3, 2013 I also enjoy both, but I'm voting Mario. I think, objectively speaking, there is a reason Mario games have been consistently popular for several decades while Sonic fizzled after a few years. Sonic games are basically holding Right while occasionally tapping jump. The illusion of speed disguises the fact that a lot of each level is auto-pilot. Mario games are a lot more exploration-based, and there's more strategy involved in defeating the enemies. Granted, neither game requires a degree in rocket science, but Mario game ARE just a bit deeper, and I think that depth has allowed the franchise to be renewed and refreshed year after year, whereas attempts to update Sonic for the 21st century have felt hollow. Summary: I like Sonic Rush, but if you compare it to New Super Mario Bros., it's pretty clear which franchise stands the test of time.

+Cafeman #4 Posted January 3, 2013 I like them both but don't think everybody likes Mario more. Mario was fine, but Sonic really lit my fire from the very 1st time I saw him. Sonic's world/universe has always been more appealing to me. Not all the tacked-on friends, though. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik and his animal-powered robots are all it needs. I think that the only games where you can claim 'press right and its on auto-pilot' would be the GBA ones by Dimps. They are not all like that - maybe the first Green Hill level can be a simple dash to the end, but there have been hidden secret alcoves and alternate paths in Sonic games since the 1st one. Some of the newer 3D ones are more like 'hold forward and run fast on auto-pilot' - at times. I like what they did with Sonic Generations. I've been watching my 2 boys re-play Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 recently (GCN versions) and I was reminded of how much there is to do and overall how well done most of it is. Another long tradition with Sonic's games have been its Bonus Rounds. These were like games all their own in Sonic 1/2/3/Knuckles. Replaying the levels as super-powered Super Sonic is something else that is nice about the Sonic games. Mario games are probably superior in design and creativity overall. The gameplay is slower - I usually grow bored before I finish any Mario game but that's just me. The sugar-coated Mario world isnt as appealing to me either.
Rex Dart #5 Posted January 3, 2013 They're both good. Both have great titles & stinkers. So you can load up the first level of Sonic 1 or 2, hold right to skip/miss most of the level, and get to the end. So? You can do that in SMB 1, 3, 4, and probably many others. CorTat-G #7 Posted January 3, 2013 I voted for Mario. When I was around 10, I was a Mario fanboy. I've calmed down over the years, but the Mario series is still my favorite. Sonic is my 2nd favorite video game series.
AtariDude #8 Posted January 4, 2013 (edited) I lik Sonic games more. Not that Mario games are bad or anything but I love the fast pace of Sonic. Edited January 4, 2013 by AtariDude
kelrodjr #9 Posted January 4, 2013 (edited) Why not have an option for both in the poll? I definitely grew up with a better knowledge of the Mario games due to the fact that the NES was one of my first consoles. However my older sister and brother-in-law had a Genesis, so I played a lot of Sonic as well. I like them both and consider them totally separate gaming experiences. I never got into the Mario vs. Sonic fanboy war when I was a kid. Edited January 4, 2013 by kelrodjr
sqoon #10 Posted January 4, 2013 At least in Mario games there always was an element of search and discover. Most Sonic games I've seen do not allow you to do that with the action being so fast paced.

chuckwalla #13 Posted January 4, 2013 Sonic all the way. In '92 it took me weeks to decide which system to get, the Genesis or SNES - I chose the Genesis and never regretted it even though I bought an SNES later on (then sold it). I could never get into Mario games even though the complexity of the 'worlds' were very interesting and more involving than Sonic. Lately i've gotten into a Sonic obsession, playing all five Genesis games a lot (Sonic 1,2,3, Spinball, and 3D Blast).

Cynicaster #16 Posted January 5, 2013 Mario has grated on me ever since he started talking. Every time I hear "It's-a-me Mario" or something similarly lame, I want to punch him in his stupid moustache. Then again, of all games from both franchises, my favorite is SMB2 so I guess I'm a bit of a maverick when it comes to this topic. Carry on.
Reaperman #17 Posted January 5, 2013 (edited) Back in 'the day' I would have gone for mario. Both had (IMO) one flop in their main line of games, Mario 2 US and Sonic 3, but mario's spinoffs tended to be better and more diverse. However I voted for neither, because we're not 'back in the day,' and they are now 3d, talking annoyances. I avoid them. If I never saw them in another new game, I wouldn't miss them, and I'd probably barely even notice. Edited January 5, 2013 by Reaperman
genesisguy #18 Posted January 5, 2013 I'd say its a tie. Mario in 8-bit was fantastic. Sonic in 16-bit beats out the Mario offerings on the SNES. So then it comes down to do I prefer Mario on the NES or Sonic on the Genesis. I couldn't pick...

CGQuarterly #20 Posted January 5, 2013 I love both. Wy would you have "neither" as a poll option, but not "both"? Chris
jmetal88 #21 Posted January 5, 2013 Where's the "both" option? I do seriously like both, but having to choose one or the other, I have to go with Sonic because of the speed aspect. Really, Jazz Jackrabbit is my favorite of the side-scrolling platformer genre, though. It feels like Sonic with a gun, and it's just awesome.
