Atari2600Lives
I never really messed with the 7800 ( CX78) joypad with 2600 games until the mid 90s. I find it really gives you a gameplay advantage (sometimes a big one) over the standard joystick , games like pitfall , spider fighter , missile command etc just seem easier because of what I feel is a superior response time . Am I the only one that feels this way? I never see much about this controller being used on the 2600 , it's just great in my opinion. littleman jack
Sometimes I feel the response time is worse. Do you keep the little stick on? Maybe mine seems worse because I take the stick off and use the thumb disk as my directional control. I do like the 7800 pad for Montezuma's Revenge on the 2600 however. Atari2600Lives
I use the stick! That's what makes it easier , you have to try it again . Edited January 8, 2013 by Atari2600Lives
boxes of sawdust
Never played w/ a 7800 gamepad, but plugging a genesis controller into my 2600 is mandatory for me when playing joust or enduro. My thumb starts to hurt if I play those games w/ the joystick.
karokoenig
Interesting... I was always a joystick guy. Changed from the 2600 right to a C64 back in the days. Always found NES controllers childish. Now that I do have an NES, I still feel awkward with a gamepad. Wears me down much more than any joystick ever did, and I am much less precise with them. Probably a training issue :-). About those controllers: I find them pretty crappy, but that's mostly because the buttons tend to get stuck under the plastic case when you press them slightly diagonally. But that might be a specific problem of those I own. No idea if that's a general issue with them. Everytime I try something really serious on the 2600, my trusted indestructible 28 year old Competition Pro comes into service.
BydoEmpire
I've tried a few times, but I always go back to a joystick. Enduro is one of my favorite games, and played it a lot w/ a joystick back in the day. I guess I just get used to the "stock" controller on each console and have a hard time switching, except on 7800 games when I use a 2600 stick ifI can. For two button games I use the 7800 pad with stick, but it's not my favorite. For what it's worth, I never had an issue with buttons sticking on my 7800 pads. Jinks
With the stick screwed in it makes it inaccurate!!
gorfcadet
I use one of Ax's modded NES pads these days and that is a big advantage.
iesposta
I have been playing Princess Rescue, or Super Mario 2600, with my 7800 CX78! Without the stick in it. It is more accurate for me than the Genesis 6-button pads I have. I am always stopping mid-jump with the Genesis pads, and not with the 7800 pads. It could be the type of game , I believe pitfall is much better with the CX78 , which matches what you are saying about jumps.
Fr0st
I rather the 7800 gamepad, it makes some games feel 'easier' to play for some reason. But games like solar fox, where its just up down left right, I use the original joystick.

kyle
I use this when playing all 2600 and 7800 games. Leave the tumb stick in you will get use to it.
