Neo Geo arcade- is this a good deal?

Recommended Posts

The cabinet is probably worth $200-$250, That's what I'd pay in Florida but prices are gonna vary greatly by geographic location (ie how common games are in your area).

$50 each for the carts is a bit optimistic. Some of the rare games can demand high dollar no doubt, but the more common ones (Art of Fighting, Samurai Showdown, etc) are more like $10-$20. Even less if you don't care about their origin (ie Asian or Bootleg carts). I have about a dozen carts for my mvs and i think i paid around $5-$10 on average for them. As far as I can tell the only carts worth more in this lot would be Metal Slug and Bust-a-Move but going by eBay completed auctions those would have a hard time hitting $50 as well.. more like $35.

I'd feel a lot better about this if you could get it for $350. That would probably be fair. But that depends on how common games are in your area, if you are on the auction circuit, etc.

If you go look at it make sure the monitor is in good shape, has a nice picture, etc and the cabinet is sturdy and free from water damage or other issues.

A few comments about this cab:

- it's a conversion cab and not SNK original. Don't know what it used to be, but it's been 're-decorated' to look like a Neo Geo. Not worth as much as an authentic cab... probably worth ~$100.

- it looks like the monitor is only 19". Since most Neo Geo games are two player, I think it's better to look for a cab with 25" or larger monitor so that you're not standing shoulder-to-shoulder and looking at a smallish screen.

- If everything works, the 2 slot motherboard is worth ~$75. If the carts are authentic US w/artwork then the Windjammers is worth ~$60 (someone overpaid for that linked auction), Metal Slug is worth ~$50, Bust-a-Move is worth ~$30 if original (most BAMs are $10 bootlegs), and those four fighting games are worth ~$10 each... max.

So... I'd agree with number six on the $350 value assuming the cab is in good condition. Personally, I'd keep looking for an authentic SNK cab with a 25" or larger monitor.

Cabinet looks like it was a Moon Patrol.

On eBay search for MVS and Cartridge and you should find a lot of stuff.

Many of the cheap ones are asian versions or just straight up bootlegs. Depends on how much that bothers you.. I have a few asian ones and they play fine (and I don't care past that ;) ) but some people are picky.

A dedicated one with a 25in monitor would be much better if you can find one. Might be more expensive though. You may also want to check and see if there are arcade auctions in your area.. Neo Geos still show up quite frequently at the auctions here.

I've only ever paid that much for a 6 slot original. My 2 and 4 slots were around $200 - $300 each with games. You can do better. I see stuff in California all the time that I can't even hope to get because it's a world away from me in the south east.

To echo the sentiments of others:

It's a conversion cab; don't pay more than $250. The cab and monitor aren't really worth much on their own.

2-slot motherboard is worth about $100

Games:

Windjammers $50

Bust A Move $30

Samurai Shodown $10

Samurai Shodown 2 $20

World Heroes $10

That said, my first arcade cabinet was a Neo 2-slot conversion (in what was originally a Super Contra) and I still have it and love it. I've gotten thousands of dollars worth of play out of the thing.

Yeah, I'd go with the original cab too. And make sure it stands straight up during transport, and doesn't lay on its back. I made the mistake of having a game shipped laying down and the vibrations screwed up the circuitry a bit. Not something that can't be fixed, but still irritating.
