dafivehole #1 Posted January 14, 2013 when I plug it in, all I get is a white screen and a hum when I turn up the volume. Any ideas? I am using a video cable that Sloopy made for me... with red & white plugs that works great on a modern LCD TV. I tried the front & rear AV connections but no change... is the monitor dead?!? Thank you, Roger
Rybags #2 Posted January 14, 2013 Seems the front is A/V and rear offers the seperate chroma/luma. There is a signal selector switch according to text of the manual I found. Also, even if a monitor won't run due to Pal/NTSC or something dead in the video circuit often it'll still play the audio. Best to try multiple devices before deciding it's a dud. SoundGammon #3 Posted January 14, 2013 Have you tried hooking a dvd player to it? Video to the white and one of the audios to the red, using the front input. A hum in the audio usually means you have video going to the audio input...
dafivehole #4 Posted January 14, 2013 I tried loading a game on disk and the signature loading sound wasn't present... Roger
dafivehole #5 Posted January 14, 2013 Good idea! I hooked my daughter's DVD player to the front of the monitor and it works like a charm!!! I used the 800XL all weekend to play games so I know that the Atari is good... could I possibly just need a new video cable?!? Thanks again, Roger Have you tried hooking a dvd player to it? dafivehole #6 Posted January 14, 2013 Nevermind, nevermind... I tried swapping the red and white plugs and it works perfectly! I guess the colors aren't supposed to match up between Atari and Commodore? Who knew? One thing, I only get B/W when using the back connections... I guess because of the Chroma/Luma split (which my 800XL doesn't have). Thanks to all, Roger
+orpheuswaking #7 Posted January 14, 2013 (edited) Yes, you would need to do the sVideo mod and have a cable with Audio/Chroma/Luma connectors to use the rear ports and get color on a 800xl (well worth it btw) Edited January 14, 2013 by orpheuswaking

The only disadvantage is that games which rely on artifacting will be in B&W.
dafivehole #9 Posted January 14, 2013 Who would be my best option for getting this upgrade done? Thanks
MEtalGuy66 #10 Posted January 15, 2013 It's a one-wire upgrade inside the XL. You can do it yourself.. But you still need the cable that has all 3 RCA jacks for Audio, Chroma, and Luma
