WispFollower #1 Posted January 30, 2013 I was hoping to get some feedback from this wise community on finding games of a semi-specific game play style. Sometimes, I crave a certain type of game which may have one or more of the following characteristics: levels/waves of enemies (possibly endless), upgradeable abilities/weapons, powerups, bonus items/points, chance games between rounds, earning money/points to spend, fast paced action, and hordes of bad guys. I have a handful of games like this which I love and play to death, but I figure there has to be many more I may have a hard time finding. I would like to hear suggestions for any system, but here is a quick list of systems I already have set up: nes, Intellivision, mame, Colecovision, N64, SNES, xbox, Dreamcast, Wii, psp, ps1, ps2, and ps3. Thank you in advance for your input.
MagitekAngel #2 Posted January 30, 2013 Sound like you need some Smash TV. The twin stick original can be had in Midway Arcade Treasures Volume 1 for PS2/XBOX/GCN, as well as Midway Arcade Origins on PS3/360. There's also a decent port to the SNES. There is a spiritual sequel - Total Carnage, that can be found in Volume 2 and origins, but I prefer Smash TV.
Satoshi Matrix #3 Posted January 30, 2013 Check out Streets of Rage Remake for Xbox homebrew. It's a lot of the things you're looking for.
retrorussell #4 Posted January 30, 2013 Guardian Legend for the NES has a few of the things you're looking for. One of my favorite games!
Satoshi Matrix #5 Posted January 30, 2013 Warcraft II for Playstation 1 also comes to mind for a good number of things you're after.
Arkhan #6 Posted January 30, 2013 Smash TV sounds like a winning idea. I'd say try a shooter like Gunbird 2 for Dreamcast. or since you have MAME, the D&D games, Elevator Action Returns... those are pretty wicked.
Reaperman #7 Posted January 30, 2013 (edited) Geometry Wars: Galaxies is right up your alley. (unless you've played it out already) Looking at your list of systems, you'll be enjoying it on Wii, though the rest of its ports are pretty good too. It supports the classic controller attachment and is about as expensive as dirt. Edited January 30, 2013 by Reaperman
MagitekAngel #8 Posted January 30, 2013 The other thing you may want to do is tell us what games you already have that fit this bill, so we have a better idea what you're after.
shadow460 #9 Posted January 30, 2013 Raiden Project, Galaga, Gyruss, Goldeneye, Burai Fighter, Burai Fighter Deluxe in the clear cart (make sure to get the Japanese version of Deluxe for maximum enemies), the Vindicators...
fiddlepaddle #10 Posted January 31, 2013 Robotron (coin-op and N64 are both fun), various Raiden games (coin-ops, N64, PS1) come to mind. And of course, Space Invaders (SNES version pretty good).
shadow460 #11 Posted January 31, 2013 Oh, yeah... Aero Fighters 1 and 2 are good. Also throw Gorf into your ColecoVision if you have one--it's my current favorite title on the system. Make sure you down a few flagships for me.
pce_collector #12 Posted February 1, 2013 I suggest River City Ransom. It has weapon pickups, shops, and lots of baddies. And it's even more fun when you play with a friend. I also suggest Smash TV. The SNES port is excellent and you can pick it up for around $13.
WispFollower #13 Posted February 1, 2013 Thanks for all the help, everyone. Smash TV on NES is one of my favorite games of all time.. the dual stick controls make for an addicting and fast paced cyclone of carnage. Robotron is another great dual stick game, but I haven't tried the N64 incarnation yet. Gauntlet Legends on Dreamcast is one of my favorites.. so many enemies to massacre. I really enjoy Galaxian on Colecovision, I just need a lot of practice. Believe it or not, I enjoy a good game of Radar Scope now and then, as well. I need to go through my collection a bit more to find additional examples. Sometimes, I forget about a gem for a while and rediscover it later.
