Vertical vs Horizontal Monitors

Recommended Posts

...lol, yes I know they're the same! :D

I was wondering where I could find a list of the classic arcade games that used monitors in a vertical configuration. I know Ms Pacman and Galaga are some (Donkey Kong as well). I'm just wondering if it's going to be worth making a dedicated mame cabinet for the vertical-only games. Currently I'm just using the games with a horziontal setting, and due to my large screens I'm still getting a decent experience...but would the vertical-only setup be worth it? For some reason I just can't seem to remember which of the great classics used vertical monitors.

Thanks!

Lots of people in the MAME hobby seem to do this.

I can definitely see how vertical games on a modern widescreen monitor in landscape orientation would kind of stink, with all of that wasted screen real estate on each side.

One thing you can do is activate the bezel artwork in MAME, which helps fill the screen out.

Personally, I'm glad I went with a 4:3 CRT in my cabinet. Vertical games don't look too out of place on it. I think it's a great "one size fits all" aspect ratio for MAME.

IMO if you go to the trouble of building a Mame cab and use a 4:3 LCD, then just put a swivel mechanism in so you can change orientation.

Although that said, vertical oriented games are more tolerable if played in landscape on a largish 4:3 monitor vs a 16:10 one.
