Metal Jesus #1 Posted February 1, 2013 Video game Compilation and Anthology sets are a great value and often reveal hidden gems for collectors. I really enjoy collecting these types sets and here are some of my favorites. Which collections would you like to see in Part 2?
VGC1612 #2 Posted February 1, 2013 For me my top 3 are SNK Arcade Classic Vol.1 on Wii,Konami Antiques MSX Collection on Saturn JP (a must with a bunch of great classic as Sky Jaguar,Mopiranger,Penguin Adventure, etc) and finally Ninja Gaiden Trilogy on SNES
RJ #3 Posted February 1, 2013 (edited) Dunno if you'll consider the 5 PS1 NAMCO compilations (they spell out N-A-M-C-O) but there are some obscure games on those. Somehow the 2nd & 4th discs in the series are costly, I got my "A" disc thru an eBay best offer, there's a fantastic gem on there called Assault I'd never played before, but once I did I was totally hooked. Great game but maybe not worth the $30 I spent. Not many other games stand out on that disc either. Ordyne is a fairly decent cute-em-up. Also check out PS1 Konami Arcade Classics for about the same $$$. I got it for Gyruss & Time Pilot, Pooyan is OK. I also have & enjoy the PS2 Taito & Capcom comps you looked at, DO NOT OVERLOOK Midway Arcade Treasures #1 & 2!!! Awesome games on there. SNK vol 1 is a keeper too. Williams Pinball stomps all over the Gottlieb one. I have it for Wii, IIRC the Wii version has 1 or 2 more tables than the PS2. I play these on my PS2 arcade cab setup I've mentioned various times before. Edited February 1, 2013 by RJ
Cynicaster #4 Posted February 2, 2013 there's a fantastic gem on there called Assault I'd never played before, but once I did I was totally hooked. I think I found that one randomly on MAME several weeks ago. If I've got the right game, it's the one with an overhead view and you're in a tank on a battle field that scrolls in all directions. You can go on to these "pad" things that launch you in the air and you're treated to a very cool "mode-7-like" effect as you look down on enemy tanks that are as small as ants, as you attempt to pick them off from the sky. The game actually uses dual joysticks with tank controls reminiscent of Battlezone, which take some getting used to but are very cool once you get the hang of it. Not sure how they would have pulled that off on PS1 unless of course the game supports the later twin-stick controllers. Very cool game that I had never heard of before.
RJ #5 Posted February 2, 2013 (edited) Thats the one! You can configure controls to use 1 stick (I use the X-Arcade DualStick) & I think you can configure buttons too. I know there are 2 prefab control methods. It's a bit tricky to do the "rear back & shoot" move, but it's used so rarely it's a non-issue. There's one boss that requires you to use it. The pentagonal "launch pads" only work a few times, then they burn out & act as regular ground. You use them to "look ahead" for thick enemy groups & nuke them from above, as you said. You can also roll L/R to dodge shots or get out of tight spots. Tons of enemy types w/ varying strengths & firepower add to the chaos. The game even supports a TATE mode which looks great. I turned my monitor sideways just to play that way. But yeah, Assault became a fast favorite. Edited February 2, 2013 by RJ
MrMaddog #6 Posted February 3, 2013 Don't forgot Data East Arcade Classics on the Wii... There's only a couple recognizable games on there like Bad Dudes & Burgertime, but lots of quirky games that are worth checking out. My favorite is Wizard Fire which is completely over the top. Thanks for making that video, I've been collecting arcade compliations ever since Williams Arcade Classics first came out on the Playstation. I pretty much got all the American ones except for Samurai Shodown Anthology & Mega Man Collection, then I have to work on finding the Japanese imports which is really going to bne a challange. I had no idea about that Data East Arcade Classics collection. Pretty sweet! Gonna have to keep an eye out for it.
RJ #9 Posted February 4, 2013 (edited) Dont forget HEAVYYYYYYYY BARREL! & a really good Magical Drop (3?) Edited February 4, 2013 by RJ
MrMaddog #10 Posted February 5, 2013 I also thought of this today, but I'm not sure if this would count. Sega Genesis Collection has some really cool arcade games included but they're unlockables. PS2/PSP versions have the early 80's titles like Zaxxon and Congo Bongo. The Xbox 360 one has the System 16 games like Space Harrier that more people love. (Then again, Mega Man Collection was mentioned and it had only two arcade titles)
RJ #11 Posted February 5, 2013 PS2 Sega Genesis collection's 5 arcade unlokables arent that great. Best (& best known) is probably Zaxxon. Then Altered Beast (even though the Genesis version's on there). Zektor is cool but difficult, Tac-Scan & Future Spy are blah.
Metal Jesus #12 Posted February 8, 2013 (edited) Part 2 of this video series... including Sega Genesis, Atari, Activision, Midway & SNK. http://youtu.be/tQhh_S9-93o I hate that I copied and pasted the Asteroids title...and forgot to change it to Missile Command. DOH! Edited February 8, 2013 by Metal Jesus
RJ #13 Posted February 9, 2013 (edited) Very nice job as always! Apparently that Sega SmashPack for Dreamcast has atrocious sound issues. Edited February 9, 2013 by RJ
