Ni No Kuni

Has anyone else picked up this game yet. I have to admit that I have this sort of love/hate relationship with JRPGs, The old ones tended to force one into grinding way too much for me to have patiance with them. The new ones now seem to pale in comparison to the more open worlded American RPGs.

Enter Ni No Kuni. It's very much an old school jrpg, though perhaps without quite as much grinding. It seems to have a fairly interesting story, with decent voice acting and a fun battle system that is a cross between pocket monsters and your traditional turn based combat system.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone else has picked it up and if so, what are the impression you have of it?

Geh, I'd have to get back to you for opinions of it, but I did buy a copy. I was interested in it enough in it to pick it up, and suspected if I waited around to buy it that it'd become hard to impossible to find. Locally at least that's become true - they've apparently sold out of whatever copies they had twice already.

Haven't had a chance to actually play it yet however. With a snow storm blowing in for the weekend, I might be snowed inside for a couple days. ;) I'll see about playing it a bit then.

I'll wait for Mord to speak the truth. My co-worker is already digging it. Some reason he mentions Grandia when talking about the battle system.

I'm digging it myself as well. there are anime cutscenes here and there throughout the story, although the in-game animated events are actually extremely smooth.

The battle system is more like Star Ocean I think. Free roaming and you can use your attacks as needed, with timers associated with each action. So if you choose to attack, you'll pick your target then for a short duration your character will rush the monster and attack repeatedly. once the timer is up you can free roam again.

It has some Grandia styled cancelling in battle as well though. If you hit a monster that's preparing for a big attack with particular attacks, it'll cancel out the attack.

You fight either as yourself or you call forth one of your familiars to fight for you. When your familiar is fighting, you're pretty much off the battlefield but the famiiliar shares your HP and MP meters. So if it goes to 0 hp, you're knocked out. Haven't had non-familiar members join my group yet to see how that works.

I've only gone through two main areas so far - the dark woods and the first town. Both looked beautifully done. And colorful! I thought current gen games were suppose to be hues of brown. What gives. :P

Anyway, I'm glad I got the game. Going to go sit down and play another 4+ hours of it.

Yeah it got really high reviews from just about everywhere. I heard it's a blend of everything including Pokemon....which I don't mind at all. Folklore was kind of like that too with familiars and such.

I played Grandia and I also played Star Ocean. Not bad at all.

Yeah I just got up to the point where you're able to tame monsters you beat to make them into your familiars - and how to evol- I mean metamorph them into new creatures.

Yeah, definitely got that pokemon slant going with the familiars.

I've had it since release (preordered from Newegg.com with a $12-off coupon several months ago), but I've only played up to the first town so far. I liked what I played, though, and yeah, it is one very pretty game.

An odd bit with the localization: that neighborhood friend's name is changed in the English audio, even though it's already an English name even in the Japanese audio. I've forgotten what the names are, but it was something like changing Mark to Philip. What to make of that?

20 hours in and in just keeps getting deeper and better as you go. You will really need to do some grinding though. Find a boss, find it's weekness, grab the familiars that have the counter punch to kill boss, level them up, go back, attack... That is the only real complaint, if it even is one and the battle system gets more and more fun as you go. The story is brilliant so far and it never ceases to stun me with how amazing it looks. Just got the casino opened up...

My kids love watching me play, which is a curse. If I play when they go to bed I get yelled at the next day. Wish I got my hands on the Wizard Edition though...

Just picked this up. Never even knew about the Wizard Edition, but I heard people got screwed over not getting one even though they pre-ordered.

Not playing it soon. Still doing my second replay of Skyrim, and I might switch over to Halo 4 for a change of pace. I was worried that even a regular copy of Ki No Kuni might get hard to find. Remember when Xenoblade was everywhere. Hard to find now.

I'm about 20 hours in (I'm at Hamelin). Other than the 3 hours it took me to catch a Lumberwood I'm enjoying this so far. I find that the boss battles tend to be a little tough since your party members AI is terrible, but other than that no complaints. The tame rate on some of these creatures seems to be a bit on the low side, but that's part of the challenge I guess.

Yeah they didn't make enough of the Wizard Edition for some reason and half the people who preordered it didn't get one (I forget the reason why, something about a miscommunication). I didn't find out about this game until long after the preorder date.

Skyrim... I need to get around to playing that some day but I didn't particularly enjoy Oblivion so I'm not in a hurry. I love the Fallout series though, so go figure.

I just finished the game yesterday after about 70hrs, and I absolutely loved it. In fact, it easily makes the top of my all-time favorites list. They seem to nail every detail major and minor, which makes playing it a joy. The artwork is of course gorgeous, and more importantly the gameplay is a nicely fine-tuned JRPG in the truest sense, back before RPGs had a J. Some grinding is involved, but like any good RPG, you are left to your devices on how you like to prepare and proceed. Despite the cartoony looks, the game can be quite tough at times (which any good game should be).

My vote for All-Time Best Game Ever has solidly been Zelda: Ocarina of Time for many years. Though I don't think Ni no Kuni usurps it, I strongly feel they've raised the bar for the next Zelda, and all RPGs in general. Nintendo, take notes! I plan on finishing up everything to get plat, just because I enjoy it so much. I can't recommend it enough. Truly loved it.

First impressions is that the game has a decent storyline so far and the graphics are very nice. I personally don't think they hold up against some other games like this I've played.

Eternal Sonata comes to mind. In spite of being released 6 years ago I think looks way better. This even pales to more recent titles like Atelier Rorona in my opinion.

I'm not very far into the game though. At level 4 I'm sure I haven't seen most of what the game has to offer. This is just an initial impression of the graphics. So far the story has been solid, and I'm enjoying it very much. Just don't see it ever being an all time favorite unless something drastic changes.

Eternal Sonata (and Kameo) had some of the best graphics around. Miss those games. Great fun.

Still haven't played Ni No Kuni yet......sitting on the shelf with my 5 million games. Need to make this one a priority.

Games sitting on the shelf... I hear you on that one. Ni No Kuni still sits in plastic, and it will probably remain that way for the foreseeable future.

Couldn't get myself to sit through Eternal Sonata. Don't know why. Sometimes when I try one of these games and it is just at the wrong moment where I have too much going on, I don't have the patience. Maybe I'll give the PS3 version a try sometime since it has more content than the 360 version.

RPG's that rely a lot on alchemy or cards.... not my cup of tea.

wow....I highly recommend going back to the 360 version unless you don't mind a challenge. They made the game more difficult on the PS3 version to the point where it can trap you in a spot if your not high enough in level (without multiple saves). We (co-op) played the game on the PS3 after finishing it on the 360 and it was annoyingly harder where we skipped battles because of that and I remember getting to a part in the game where we could not beat a boss and had to go back to level up on these cliffs that had very few encounters. We had no choice but to start over at which point we just gave up. A shame cause I think they added some more content to the PS3 version. The 360 version IMO is the best and most balanced game.

Took a brief break from this to finish up Dead Island Riptide, have gotten back into it. I like it. I have 3 familiars now. The game I think reminds me of Blue Dragon on the 360, I could be remembering wrong though. Been years since I played Blue Dragon, but for some reason it kept popping into my head while playing this. With Tales of Xillia coming soon, I need to power play through this! Good thing I have a 5 day weekend coming up next weekend! At least some of it will be playing RPGs you can bet on that!

Just curious, does anyone have the CE of this game? I'd have loved to of gotten it, but the $400 price tag was a bit too much for me. Looks like it's dropped some since then, but enough for my tastes. I might snag it if I ever see it for around $100.
